Corona, CA: West Covina officer honored for fiery plane crash rescue

A West Covina police officer received the Burn Institute's 2012 Inland Empire Spirit of Courage Award last weekend for pulling an injured pilot and passenger from the burning wreckage of an airplane crash in Corona.

Officer Mike Weathermon was given the honor at a Sept. 21 ceremony in Riverside, officials said.

"I'm very proud of him," West Covina Police Chief Frank Wills said. "He brought a tremendous credit and distinction to the West Covina Police Department.

The Dos Lagos Stadium 15 theater in Corona has released its list of special film screenings for the month of October. And it spans from black and white classics to modern animated hits.

And it looks like they are starting with one of the scariest films ever made: “The Exorcist.”

The film screens Friday-Sunday, Oct. 5-7. It will be followed by “The Shining” Oct. 12-14, a double feature of “The Mummy” and “The Wolfman” Oct. 19-21 and finally another double feature with “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” Oct. 26-28.

Two people who bought Mega Millions Lottery tickets worth more than $300,000 apiece at Inland Empire convenience stores have until the end of today to claim their winnings -- or lose them altogether.

On March 27, nine Mega players were holding tickets that matched five of six numbers, giving each of them a share of a nearly $3 million pot. Seven people claimed their shares, totaling $308,573 each. But two winners who purchased tickets in the Inland Empire have yet to come forward.

One ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven store at 7014 Archibald Ave. in Corona. The other ticket was bought at an am/pm minimart at 3890 N. University Parkway in San Bernardino.

I’ve been wanting to have my first Gastropub experience since I passed the Haven Gastropub in Pasadena while walking in downtown. Between work, “training” for my 5k and not having too much “refuel time” the last couple months–it was left uncrossed on my to do list. Until last night.

Earlier this month, a Gastropub twenty miles from my work opened. With a Charlie Chaplin movie playing on the wall to the steampunk inspired art on the walls, the first thing you notice when walking into the Steam Haus Gastropub is the cool decor. The servers were dressed in standard steampunk attire and they even raised the glass, garage walls when it got a bit cooler outside. They definitely get extra points on creating an amazing atmosphere.

Steam Haus Gatropub won’t leave you disappointed if your taste buds are looking for a unique experience. Duck Fat Fries, Popcorn (cooked in bacon & rosemary) and the A.M. Burger (8 ounces of Pat LaFrieda Beef, bacon, onion jam & fried egg served between two gourmet waffles) are just some of the menu options they have to offer. Steam Haus also caters to your four-legged friend. Their dog menu includes grilled sirloin steak, oven roasted chicken breast and dog gravy.

“I have eaten at a lot of Indian Restaurants and most of them are usually outdated in decor, slightly unclean, and sometime a little too much grease in the cooking. Regardless we are big fans of Indian Food and stumbled across Spice Route for the lunch buffet. This is very authentic Indian food. The decor was beautiful, elegant, and very clean. They had nice linen table cloths, crystal ware, and he buffet was filled with a great selection of classic cuisine. The staff was very kind, attentive, and pleasant. I like that the waitress asked us if we would like lemon on the side with our water. We accepted & she brought it on the side freshly sliced on a small plate. I tried a little bit of everything on the buffet and there was not one item I did not enjoy. This is the BEST INDIAN and PAKISTANI cuisine I have ever tried. It was not too greasy. The goat curry had no bit of gaminess (which goat can be a challenge to prepare). The garlic naan was perfect. The food was perfectly seasoned with wonderful combination of spices. The ambiance was very relaxed and comfortable. My favorite was the Keema Samosa and naan bread.

At the end of the meal, the owner , Tariq (sp?) came out and introduced himself and asked how our meal went. He was very kind and interested in our opinion. This left a very good impression on us.

Corona, CA: 17-Year-Old Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Car In Menifee

Authorities say a 17-year-old pedestrian suffered fatal injuries following a collision in Menifee.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Sergio Rodriguez reported in a department statement that the fatal crash took place in the area of Domenigoni Parkway and Laguna Vista Drive about 11:10 p.m. Friday.

The statement said the victim, identified by the coroner’s office as Steven Nunez of Corona, was struck by a sedan while walking east on the westbound side of Domenigoni Parkway.

The City Council of Corona, California has ratified their decision to officially terminate their red-light camera program effective November 5, 2012. At the City Council meeting on September 4th, the City narrowly voted 3-2 to axe the city's contract with Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc. The Southern California City, located in Riverside County 47 miles southeast of Los Angeles, originally entered into the contract with Reflex on November 5, 2008. The contract consisted of a 3 year term with two automatic renewal terms of one year, unless a party canceled with 60 days notice.

A Riverside man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and their two young children had warned that the family would be "laid to rest" if the woman rejected his marriage proposal, according to a restraining order filed just days before the deaths.

Laura Reveriano, 25, said she called police after her ex, Selvin Chajon Rodriguez, 23, stole her car keys and cellphone the day she turned down his proposal, according to papers filed last week in Riverside County Superior Court.

Rodriguez broke a window in the house, sending glass flying onto her son, who had been sleeping near the window, she wrote in the request for a domestic violence restraining order. The glass reportedly cut her son's chest.

Corona, CA: Corona man working for EDD sentenced for conspiracy and bribery

A Corona man who worked for the state Employment Development Department in Anaheim and took more than $40,000 in kickbacks in an unemployment insurance scheme was sentenced today to 76 months in federal prison.

David Paul Holden, 31, pleaded guilty May 4 to one count each of conspiracy and bribery, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Robbins said.

U.S. District Judge David O. Carter ordered Holden to pay $510,454 in restitution to the Employment Development Department, Robbins said. It was unclear if he had an ability to pay.

Corona, CA: Apartments planned for former toxic site

Owners of a former toxic dump site in west Corona say they plan to build apartments and an industrial park on 38 acres.

The project could be considered by the Corona Planning Commission in November, but a date has not yet been set, said Sandra Yang, associate planner for Corona.

Developer Rusty Turner, of Turner Real Estate Investments in Newport Beach, said his company is working to get entitlements to build 288 apartments and an industrial park on the site known as Thomas Ranch. Revisions to the project still are being made.

Authorities are asking for the public's help to track down two men who stole 12 rifles from a Corona gun shop.

The break-in happened on Aug. 14 at Turner's Outdoorsman at 2264 Griffin Way. Multiple suspects wearing long-sleeved shirts and baseball caps forced through a security door and stole the guns. The suspects fled the scene in a car, but no description was released.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Corona police are calling the investigation a top priority.

The stabbing suspect was shot during a confrontation with police near the 15 and 91 freeways in Corona

A man suspected in the fatal stabbing of a woman and her two children Thursday morning in Riverside, Calif. was shot during a confrontation with police who found him covered in blood near a Corona freeway, according to Riverside police.

Police were called to a house at about 7 a.m. Thursday in the 10400 block of Granger Court in Riverside. The woman and children — a 1-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy — found at the home were prounounced dead at the hospital.

A 21-year-old tutor was free on bond Tuesday morning after being arrested for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl.

Police say Mathew Davis met his victim while tutoring her at Tutor Whiz in Corona.

The investigation began after the parents of the victim discovered online conversations between the two and called police. Officers say a search warrant at Davis' home lead to evidence that Davis had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with the victim.

The Build Brigade begins with a ceremony Friday, August 24 at 8:30 a.m. Following the opening event, the veteran and family members, HFOT representatives, and selected invited guests will work together to raise the home’s first wall. The goal of the two-day build is to frame, side, and roof the house and install windows and doors. Interior and finishing work will be completed in the following months. The home will provide Mayer with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

Corona, CA: Sheriff Investigates Suspicious Death at Morongo Casino

On Monday, August 13, 2012, at approximately 8:15 AM, deputies assigned to the Cabazon Station of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa regarding a male being found unresponsive in a parked vehicle.

Upon arrival, deputies found Casino employees and medical staff performing life-saving measures on the male located on the top level of the parking structure. The male victim was later transported to a local hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased. He is described as a 38-year-old Caucasian male from Corona.

This investigation has been assumed by investigators assigned to the Cabazon Station. The identity of the deceased is being withheld, pending next of kin notification. This death investigation is currently active and ongoing.

Monster Beverage Corp on Thursday said a state attorney general has begun investigating the ingredients and advertising of its flagship, namesake energy drink.

Monster said the probe is at an early stage, and that it did not know whether it would lead to any action or materially hurt its financial results or operations.

Shares of the Corona, California-based company, one of the largest makers of energy drinks in the United States, dropped 4.8 percent in after-hours trading, extending a decline that followed Wednesday's release of weaker-than-expected second-quarter results.

10-Year Corona Deal Valued at $4.2M

B/E Aerospace, a world-wide distributor of aerospace fasteners and consumables for the commercial, business and military jet markets, has signed a lease for 93,268 square feet at 350 W. Rincon St. in Corona, CA.

The 10-year deal is valued at $4.2 million. The tenant is expanding from its current 50,000-square-foot space when it takes occupancy of the larger space, which offered a great manufacturing layout at a better rate.

Robert “Dr. Shine” Freeman, a Maryland minister, took the command “let us pray” and turned it into “let us prey.”

Because that’s what he did. He preyed on his people.

Prosecutors said Freeman, 56, hid assets to avoid paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in debts. He recently pleaded guilty to obstructing bankruptcy court proceedings and received a 27-month prison sentence. He was ordered to pay more than $630,000 in restitution to four church members who took out loans to buy cars and a mansion.

Recently it held a showcase featuring all six of the Kids Rock Free bands for the price of $10 for adults, $5 for kids. Kids in the band are part of the Kids Rock Free program. The bands included the Drum Line (new to Kids Rock Free), Deadline, Unbroken, The Cutting Edge, The Igniters, and The Fender Benders. The most recent event showcased the talent of all the bands but it was a bitter sweet event because some of the kids were aging out. That means by age 18 they are too old for the Kids Rock Free Program. The program offers free and low cost lessons to families and kids age 7 to 17. Class choices include drums, bass, guitar, vocals, and more. The kids that get involved learn from top notch teachers and also get to do gigs with huge talents such as Paul Rodgers and other famous people. Friends, family, and the community are invited to the Fender Center for events that the kids perform in and other events that are adult only shows. The venue, when hosting an event, usually has food and beverage service to go with the shows. The Rhythm Lounge inside the venue is spacious and intimate. The lighting and sound is always top notch. The outside venue, the Steve Miller TLC Amphitheater, is used for larger events.

Corona, Ca: Body found in San Bernardino alley

A body was found in an alley south of Highland Avenue early Sunday morning with an apparent gunshot wound after a report of shots being fired.

The victim was identified as 45-year-old Sean Daniel Winegar of Corona, according to a news release.

Winegar's body was found between F and G streets shortly after 3 a.m., according to the release.

A federal judge on Wednesday turned down Utah-based MonaVie’s request for an emergency order prohibiting a former top distributor from posting information on Facebook about the new multilevel marketing company he has joined.

U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups ruled at the end of a 4½ hour hearing that MonaVie of South Jordan had failed to show that Joseph Licciardi had likely violated policies of the company, which markets a nutritional fruit juice and weight-loss products to a network of independent distributors. Distributors earn commissions according to the number of others they bring into the company.

Licciardi of Corona, Calif., had been a "black diamond," one of 30 very top distributors, earning commissions of more than $4.4 million in his five years with the company, according to testimony in a lawsuit filed by MonaVie.

Corona, CA: Camp Pendleton Marine from Corona killed in Afghanistan

A 22-year-old rifleman from Corona was killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Lance Cpl. Curtis Duarte died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

Duarte enlisted in the Marine Corps on Aug. 6, 2008. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan.

West Covina police arrested the last two suspects in the takeover robbery of a cell phone store where cash, iPhones, iPads and tablets estimated at $50,000 were taken.

Detectives have recovered the stolen items and the money, according to Sgt. Dennis Patton.

He said Mr Johara Richardson, 23, was arrested without incident Wednesday at his Corona home.

Corona, CA: Pickup Crashes Into Tree, Kills Corona Driver

A Corona man died in Hemet Sunday, when the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a tree, authorities said.

Barrett Gomez, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 32500 block of Highway 74, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s office.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the pickup truck he was driving went off the road and struck a tree at about 1:05 a.m.

Traffic officers were investigating the reason the pickup went off the road.

Corona, CA: CA drivers will allowed to text, with restrictions

California drivers will be allowed to text when they're behind the wheel of a car, as long as they're using a hands-free device, and with some restrictions.

Under a bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday, beginning Jan. 1, drivers will be able to send, dictate and listen to text messages, but only if they're using a voice-activated device attached to a cellphone by a headset or Bluetooth earpiece, or a program inside a vehicle, like OnStar.

AB 1536, sponsored by California Assemblyman Jeff Miller, R-Corona, will allow Californians to text behind the wheel for the first time since texting while driving was outlawed more than three years ago.

A famous piece of rock and roll history has changed its tune about going public.

Fender Musical Instruments Corp., which produced guitars strummed by the likes of Buddy Holly and Eric Clapton and famously set on fire by Jimi Hendrix, said late Thursday that it dropped its plans for an initial public offering.

Small plane crashes near Corona Airport; 2 escape

A small plane crashed in Corona on Friday evening, touching off a small fire.

According to Corona police, the plane crashed at 6:18 p.m. in a field at Lincoln Avenue and Harrington Street, east of a runway for Corona Municipal Airport. Two people on board managed to escape with unknown injuries.

An Ontario high school soccer coach is in custody after allegedly touching and kissing a 14-year-old player in a training room.

Officers arrested Earl Gann, 56, Tuesday near his home in Corona on suspicion of felony lewd acts with a child, said Ontario police Sgt. David McBride.

City Shuts Down Animal Display After Hearing From PETA

Corona Assistant Planner Sandra Yang informed PETA today that an animal exhibit by the Ramos Bros. Circus will be shut down immediately because it violates a city ordinance prohibiting the display of wild or exotic animals. According to reports received by PETA, the circus was displaying at least two zebras, who are specifically mentioned in the ordinance. The ordinance bars the "display … of wild or exotic animals for public entertainment or amusement in the city." The city made the decision to terminate the exhibit after a call from PETA Foundation attorney Maria Beckman, which informed the city that the display was in direct violation of the ordinance.

Corona, Ca: Nevada Woman, 48, Falls to Death From Freeway Overpass in Corona

A 48-year-old Nevada woman suffering from some type of medical emergency fell to her death from a freeway overpass on southbound Interstate 15, according to the county coroner.

Maria Estrada of Henderson, Nev., fell about 60 feet into a drainage channel from an overpass about 30 feet south of Temescal Canyon Road near Corona shortly after midnight, the coroner said.

The 4th of July Celebration begins with the “Main Street U.S.A. Parade” on July 4th at 10:00 a.m. The parade starts at Ontario and Main Streets, travels down Main and concludes at Olive Street. Over 75 entries are expected to participate in this year’s parade.

A 20-year-old victim used her street smarts Tuesday morning, June 12, to lead Claremont Police to the capture of 2 crooks.

The woman was standing outside Wolfe’s Market, 160 W. Foothill Blvd., when the passenger of a gold Ford Focus forcibly grabbed her cell phone out of her hand, got back in the car and quickly sped away, according to Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen. Though the thieves may have thought they had gotten away, the last laugh was on them. The victim was able to provide the vehicle’s license plate to the police, who were able to identify the crooks and placed the car on a “wanted list”.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s detectives arrested a Corona massage therapist accused of sexually assaulting a client in Chino Hills, authorities said Friday.

Marc Anthony Brown, 30, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of sexual battery and rape with a foreign object.

Brown works at “various locations” as a massage therapist, and sheriff’s department officials said they suspect he may be involved in other assaults. Brown has been licensed by the state as a certified massage therapist since December, records show.

After years of trying to find funding, Corona is hosting a groundbreaking for a memorial honoring local veterans.
