A man suspected in the fatal stabbing of a woman and her two children Thursday morning in Riverside, Calif. was shot during a confrontation with police who found him covered in blood near a Corona freeway, according to Riverside police.
Police were called to a house at about 7 a.m. Thursday in the 10400 block of Granger Court in Riverside. The woman and children — a 1-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy — found at the home were prounounced dead at the hospital.
The suspect was identified as the father of the children.
About 15 minutes after the discovery of the stabbing victims, authorities found the suspect about eight miles from the home after a caller reported suspicious activity near the 91 and 15 freeways (Map). The caller told police that the man, whose description matched that of the stabbing suspect, was walking away from his vehicle.

The caller told police that the man, whose description matched that of the stabbing suspect, was walking away from his vehicle.
The man, covered in blood, was carrying a knife, according to witnesses.
Corona officers shot the suspect, who was transported to the hospital, according to police. A witness told NBC4 that he saw the man run from his vehicle and toward two rail cars under the overpass.
"The police, at one time, were probably only 20 feet away from him," said witness Vince Allevatl. "He ran right in front of the, never looked over at them. He ran down between a couple of railroad cars. Once the police passed us, we heard one shot."
Details regarding the suspect's condition and the events that led to the shooting were not immediately available.
Aerial video at the location of the officer-involved shooting showed investigators on and below a freeway overpass. Crime tape was stretched across several rail tracks under the overpass and a Honda CR-V was stopped on the side of the freeway transition road.
The northbound 15 Freeway transition to the 91 Freeway was closed during the investigation.
