Corona, CA: Corona civil engineer named new Salton Sea executive director

A Corona civil engineer and technical director was named the Salton Sea Authority’s new executive director by the agency’s board, the authority announced Friday.

Roger Shintaku, who works at Elan Associates in Corona, will begin work in January.

His background includes experience in strategic planning, project development, water resources planning and liaison work with governmental agencies, the authority stated in a release. Shintaku has also helped secure and process hundreds of millions of dollars in government grants and loans, agency officials said.

Corona, CA: Former baseball star Lenny Dykstra sentenced in federal bankruptcy case

Lenny Dykstra, the former New York Mets outfielder who became a successful self-taught investor, was sentenced Monday to 6 1/2 months in federal custody following bankruptcy fraud and other federal charges, authorities announced Monday.

Dykstra, 49, faced 20 years in prison but prosecutors recommended 2 1/2 years following his guilty plea to three felony counts -- bankruptcy fraud, concealment of assets and money laundering, according to U.S. Attorney spokesman Thom Mrozek.

Dykstra is already serving a three-year state prison sentence after pleading no contest in July to grand theft auto in a separate case.

Ideally, Casey St. Clair would be spending Thanksgiving relaxing and eating dinner with her boyfriend and his family.

Instead, the part-time Target employee and substitute teacher will work next Thursday night during the early kickoff of the big-box retailer's Black Friday sale. Stores will open at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving this year, reflecting a wider shift in the retail industry toward getting a head start on the biggest shopping day of the year.

Wal-Mart workers plan Black Friday walkout

As it stands now, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Sears and KMart will be the first large retail chains to open their doors for bargain hunters at 8 p.m. Many other chains are open Thanksgiving Day, but their Black Friday sales don't start until midnight or Friday morning.

The Santiago High School Marching Band will lead the Santa Arrival Parade through The Shops at Dos Lagos at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 17. The public is invited to welcome Santa Claus as he arrives at the stage near the children’s play area and join him in the countdown to illuminate the 40-foot Christmas Tree. Sparkling holiday lights throughout the center will be simultaneously illuminated with the Christmas Tree to officially launch the center’s Celebrate the Holidays Close to Home…Make It Merry and Bright theme, which features family events, musical performances on the Dos Lagos Amphitheater stage and caroling.

The November 17 festivities begin at noon with a FREE holiday movie, The Polar Express, at Dos Lagos Stadium 15 Theatre. Families also may visit with Donner and Blitzen, two of “Santa’s live reindeer,” from noon – 4 p.m. near the children’s play area.

Immediately, John Harris will temporarily fill the vacancy left at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta and Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar when former CEO Ken Rivers resigned in September, a spokesperson for Southwest Healthcare System said Thursday, in a news release.

Gastropubs may be few and far here in the Empire, and Steam Haus Gastropub hopes to change that landscape. Located in the Dos Lagos Shopping Center (bravely across the driveway from the stiff competition in Taps), the restaurant masterfully replicates that whole steampunk vibe, from clockwork sculptures that decorate the walls and period set-pieces that double as candleholders and centerpieces on tables, to the waitresses and bartenders outfitted in period garb (black and white-striped Victoria corsets, military-inspired garb with vests and coats). It’s like stepping into that magical world of Phillip Pullman or to The City of Lost Children.

This week was a challenge. I struck out three times before I found a good spot for this week's lunch review. The fourth try turned out to be a great place - Miguel's Jr., located in the Heritage Crossings shopping center near Roanoake Road in Fontana. I spotted it while driving by on Cherry Avenue, and decided I would give it a try.

The original Miguel's restaurant opened in 1973 in Corona and in 1975 the first Miguel's Jr. fast-food restaurant opened.

The family-owned chain now includes three Miguel's restaurants and 10 Miguel's Jr. fast-food locations in the Inland Empire and Orange County.

The dining area is nice, with a colorful decor and ample seating (indoor only) with both booths and tables. Food orders are Hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday placed at the counter and food is brought to the guests. Drinks are self-serve, with unlimited refills.

Corona, CA: Corona man arrested after alleged extortion attempt in Victorville

A Corona man was arrested by San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies at his home Wednesday on suspicion of burglary and extortion.

Authorities said Dennis Jackson, 61, went to the Pick and Pull Automotive posing as a state occupational safety and health administration inspector under the alias of Tim Peters.

Jackson also claimed to be a retired FBI agent and showed employees a badge, the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Corona, CA: U.S. EPA Settles with Lead Acid Battery Manufacturer in Corona for Air Violations / Company to Pay More Than $167,000, Install Additional Air Filters to Capture Lead Particles (CA)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that U.S. Battery Manufacturing Company has agreed to pay $167,300 to resolve federal Clean Air Act violations. U.S. Battery, located in Corona, Calif., failed to comply with federal emissions monitoring and reporting requirements, including performance testing requirements for its lead emission control devices. In addition to paying the penalty, the company will install secondary high efficiency air filters to capture additional lead particles.

"By failing to monitor and test its pollution controls, the company increased the health risks for employees and the nearby community," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA's Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest. "EPA will remain vigilant in enforcing the Clean Air Act."

AVT Inc. is rolling out a line of wall-mounted vending machines that provide patients with information about various medicines, and dispense samples of them.

Called the Automated Medicine Information and Dispensing System, the machine displays product information on a 32" touchscreen display and can be programmed to dispense samples when authorized. It has a capacity of up to 300 items.
