Corona, CA: Former baseball star Lenny Dykstra sentenced in federal bankruptcy case

Lenny Dykstra, the former New York Mets outfielder who became a successful self-taught investor, was sentenced Monday to 6 1/2 months in federal custody following bankruptcy fraud and other federal charges, authorities announced Monday.

Dykstra, 49, faced 20 years in prison but prosecutors recommended 2 1/2 years following his guilty plea to three felony counts -- bankruptcy fraud, concealment of assets and money laundering, according to U.S. Attorney spokesman Thom Mrozek.

Dykstra is already serving a three-year state prison sentence after pleading no contest in July to grand theft auto in a separate case.

Corona, CA: Johnny Cash Museum to Open This Summer on Lower Broad

Well, our city certainly has no dearth of music-themed museums and halls of fame and so forth — even if they do adopt extremely long monikers and feature demos by non-Beatles with Beatle names. But before I go digressing, let me just tell you what's up: As reported by our sister publication, The City Paper, Johnny Cash friend and fan Bill Miller plans to open a museum dedicated to The Man in Black this summer on Lower Broad. The museum will be located near the intersection of Third Avenue South and Broadway, and it will cost about $7 million to construct. Says CP:

“This is the realization of a long term dream,” Miller said. Specifically, that dream consists of a two-floor, 18,000 square foot museum, including a 250-seat music venue, honoring Cash's life and musical legacy. Miller said the project will cost roughly $7 million and open this summer. The museum will be privately-funded by Miller, a former Corona, Calif. mayor, memorabilia dealer and expert. “We can do whatever we want ... We don't have a board to report to,” Miller said. “Johnny always trusted me. Whatever I do, [it will be] how he wanted it to be done.”

Riverside, CA: Rodney King Admits to Using Prescription Marijuana

Editors Note: Can't we all get a bong; I mean get along?

Rodney King, whose beating by members of the Los Angeles Police Department was videotaped and led to the 1992 Los Angeles riots, has admitted that he was under the influence of a "medical marijuana prescription" when he was booked this week on suspicion of driving while impaired.

"I had marijuana in me that I take to deal with migraine headaches and pain in my lower extremities, although I should not have been driving," he told CNN Thursday.

Police pulled King's 1994 Mitsubishi over about 60 miles southeast of Los Angeles, in Moreno Valley, police said.

The police report states that a Moreno Valley traffic enforcement unit observed King commit "several traffic violations," though he was not cited for speeding, Riverside Sheriff spokeswoman Courtney Donowho told CNN. After questioning King, the patrol officer noticed that King was exhibiting "signs of behavior that might involve alcohol or drug consumption," she continued.

King was asked to step out of the car and submit to a voluntary field sobriety test, according to Donowho, who added that King was cooperative and compliant.

"A preliminary evaluation of the driver indicated he was possibly driving while impaired," continued Donowho.

Earlier this year, King was cited for driving without a license.

Corona, CA: Lenny Dykstra -- No Luck with Bail, Still Stuck in Jail

Lenny Dykstra struck out again -- because TMZ has learned, the judge refused to lower his $50,000 bail and the Hollywood producer that was supposed to bail him out didn't have enough cash on hand to cover the bill.

As we previously reported, producer Jonathan Heap showed up to court today in L.A. -- where he expected the judge to lower Lenny's bail amount -- but the judge refused to budge ... demanding the full $50,000 to spring Lenny from the pokey.

We're told Heap was banking on the judge to lower his number -- and didn't bring enough cash to cover the original bail amount.

Heap tells TMZ, he's still committed to freeing Lenny -- and will come up with the extra cash this weekend ... to bail out Lenny next week.

Fingers crossed.

Corona, CA: Dykstra Charged -- Cocaine, Ecstasy and HGH Found

Lenny Dykstra was just formally charged with multiple felonies, including possession of cocaine and Ecstasy ... which were found in his home when LAPD officers arrested him.

The L.A. County District Attorney is accusing Dykstra of committing 23 felonies and misdemeanors. As TMZ first reported the alleged crimes include auto theft, identity theft, filing false financial statements ... and possession of controlled substances.

The D.A. says police found coke, Ecstasy, as well as Somatropin -- a synthetic human growth hormone -- in the former major leaguer's home while executing a search warrant on April 14.

Law enforcement sources tell us it was a small amount of coke and Ecstasy for "personal use" ... not distribution.

Dykstra's accountant and a friend were also charged -- and all three are scheduled to be arraigned later today. The D.A. will ask that bail be set at $500,000 for each party.

If found guilty of all charges ... Dykstra faces up to 12 years in state prison.

Aside from this arrest .. Dykstra is also under indictment for a federal bankruptcy fraud charge.

Corona, CA: UFC Gym Grand Opening in Corona, Calif - Coverage and Interviews Pt. 1

First Impressions

A cool, sunny day welcomed the grand opening of the new UFC Gym in Corona, Calif.

While the event wasn't actually set to begin until 10 a.m., many fans and spectators lined up as early as 8 a.m. to stand in line for autographs. And if that's not surprising enough, autograph sessions weren't expected to even begin until noon.

Vendors and nutrition companies lined one side of the parking lot by a modest stage where the ribbon-cutting was set to take place.

Though definitely a far cry from the size and number of booths at the famous UFC Expos, the vendors and businesses there were more than enough. And, as always, there were more than enough of those annoying handouts to go around.

The gym itself was actually smaller than I imagined it would be, but that's likely more my faulty expectations than a reflection on the gym itself. In fact, it's roughly 45,000 square feet; not small by any standards.

Also, this is the third UFC Gym, and the largest of the three. There was more than enough space for several rows of ellipticals, treadmills and other heart-pounding, sweat-inducing machines for members to use.

The staff and a few members gave a quick circuit demonstration with five stations, showing how even a 25-30 second rotation can give an intense workout. By the end of the two-and-a-half minute demonstration, all members were sweaty and visibly worn out.

That's the kind of intensity that is foreign and fascinating to many outside of the sport, and can now take part in it through the gym.

You know you're in an MMA gym when you find equipment and machines that look like they've been taken straight out of someone's backyard sitting in front of you, and yet, it strangely doesn't look out of place. Seriously, where else would you find a tire sitting in the middle of the floor?

On top of that, there was a Jacob's Ladder right next to some treadmills and a rope workout machine that simulates the climbing rope they made you climb back in gym class in the '80s.

You see these types of workout machines in specialized workout videos and late-night infomercials, but I've never seen them up close. They'd definitely provide a cool, innovative workout.

And if that's not a big enough giveaway to the kind of gym you are in, sitting dead-center in the gym is, of course, an Octagon.

However, the biggest difference that separates the UFC Gym from an ordinary gym is its family and community focus.

Several kids who were taking classes at the UFC Gym walked into the cage in the afternoon, giving spectators a demonstration of the moves they had been learning.

There are self-defense classes for men, women and children. And the gym has a section devoted for kids called, well, "Kid's Gym."

This focus on families and communities goes all the way to the top. As it says on the UFC Gym's Senior Vice President Adam Sedlack's Twitter page, the gym is "A new place in the fitness industry. Not your Parent's Gym; It's your Gym!"

In a brief conversation with Adam, I was amazed about how passionate he was not only about the business aspect of the gym, but its significance to the community and ability to affect peoples' opinions of the sport.

Through their UFC viewing parties (free, of course, for members) during some of the recent fights, people unfamiliar with the sport have gotten to see it for the very first time.

And because of the classes and opportunities provided by the gym for these newcomers to take part in some of the intense workouts and training like that of UFC fighters, many have become instant fans.

BJ's Announcement

One of the awaited events of the day was BJ Penn's mysterious announcement that would be given during the first media interview in the morning.

And his announcement was consistent with the theme of the UFC's increasing involvement within local communities through their UFC Gyms.

BJ Penn announced that construction will begin on a UFC Gym in his native Hawaii, and will be branded with his name.

UFC Gym: BJ Penn should be completed by Jan. 1, 2012, with facilities comparable to that of the one in Corona. It will be replacing the famed "Pipeline Cafe" in Honolulu, which closed its doors in early February of this year.

This is a project that has been two years in the making, and will be the first UFC Gym branded with a fighter's name.

"I'm trying to be humble and sit here and take it all in, but I'm very, very excited by this whole thing."

BJ also mentioned that efforts will be discussed to reach out to at-risk youth through the gym and its programs.

Fighter interviews from Phil Davis, Donald Cerrone, Leonard Garcia, and more from BJ Penn will be covered in Pt. 2. This will include additional photos and videos.

Look for it tomorrow!

Corona, CA: Lenny Dykstra - Limo Driver Dishes on Deceitful Dykstra

Lenny Dykstra Took Advantage of Help According to Limo Driver

Lenny Dykstra had all the answers. He took started a jet charter company and magazine dedicated to financial advice for athletes.

It seems that the man nicknamed "Nails" needed some advice of his own. Dykstra has since been arrested for a Federal bankruptcy crime and embezzlement. He can add one irate limo driver to the list of people he has angered over the years.

Dykstra is a taker. He accepted gifts without the least bit of thought about repaying his debts. All of this according to his former limo driver.

That driver sat down recently with RotoExperts.com Managing Director, Scott Engel recently for an interview. Engel refers to the driver as Jerry, as he hopes to remain anonymous. The full interview can be read here.

Jerry was a huge Mets fan. By relation, that made him a huge Lenny Dykstra fan. Engel describes how the two met.

Jerry estimates it was the month of May in 2009 when he saw Dykstra standing on the corner of Third Avenue in the high 40s, hailing a cab. Jerry instantly recognized Dykstra and pulled over, offering to take him anywhere he wanted to go. Jerry and Dykstra instantly hit it off, and Dykstra then asked Jerry to run him to various places around town for approximately five days.

Dykstra would run up a $1,000 bill and proceed to pay Jerry with a $100 bill and a credit card number. The number was declined a few days later.

The number belonged to his assistant that only slightly vouched for Dykstra when Jerry confronted her about the declined card.

Jerry then picked up Dykstra up at the airport in 2009. Nails was joined by a lady friend at the time. Again, the card Dykstra used would later be declined. Lenny was passing off "associates" cards as his own. Hardly the practice of a financial adviser.

Jerry continued to drive Dykstra around hoping beyond hope that his hero would straighten out. He never did. Jerry would lose thousands as he drove Dykstra around town and fed him leftovers from his own home.

We all think that Lenny hit rock bottom recently when he was finally arrested. It seems he had been meandering in some lowly depths well before that. Jerry knows all too well now that childhood heroes are human, nothing more.

They can be just as deceitful as a stranger walking down the street. Lenny is a man that could not let the high life go. He was going to cheat and borrow to keep his image alive, and he hurt so many people in the process.

Riverside, CA: Singer Etta James has been hospitalized with blood poisoning, her son said on Friday.

The 73 year-old blues legend was admitted to hospital in Riverside, California, earlier this week with a urinary tract infection and the blood infection sepsis, said her son Sametto James.

"It was a really bad infection," Sametto James said before adding, "Right now she's doing a lot better."

Etta James is a three-time Grammy winner whose songs like "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy" made her a key figure in the early days of rock 'n' roll. Her signature song, the 1961 ballad "At Last," proved her a master of the blues.

James, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, has struggled with obesity in the past. In 2003, she underwent gastric bypass surgery.
