Courtesy of this tweet, we learned that the Mira Loma Five Guys Burgers and Fries, at 6285 Pats Ranch Road, Suite A, opened today!

As with the recently-opened Rancho Cucamonga location, the Mira Loma location will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Besides the Rancho Cucamonga location, the Mira Loma store joins the current I.E. locations in Temecula and La Quinta.

Corona, CA: Onslaught of Home Complaints in SoCal

RIVERSIDE, CA: Monday was not a good day for homebuilders in Southern California. In five complaints in Riverside Superior Court, unhappy homebuyers seek damages for construction defects in 1,993 homes.

A class action against Del Webb California Corp. alleges water intrusion problems in 1,776 homes in the Sun City Palm Desert development in Palm Desert.

A complaint against Lennar Homes of California involves seven homes in San Jacinto.

KB Home Coastal is accused of building eight defective homes in Perris.

Woodbridge Development and others were sued over 24 homes in Corona.

And Lennar Homes of California is accused of building 74 defective homes in Mira Loma and Corona.

Mira Loma, CA: Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges After Severely Injured Horse Discovered

Officials were forced to euthanize the horse because its injuries were so severe

MIRA LOMA, CA: A Riverside County man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony animal abuse after authorities discovered a severely injured horse and more than 100 illegal cockfighting roosters at his home.

The horse had ruptured tendons and its injuries were so severe, officials were forced to euthanize the animal.

40-year-old Francisco Javier Ponce is also suspected of running a cockfighting operation out of his Mira Loma home on the 6000 block of Marlatt Street.

The illegal cocks were also euthanized, according to officials at the Riverside Co. Dept. of Animal Services.

Inland Empire, CA: Borders to close half its Inland bookstores

Borders bookstores in Mira Loma, Chino and Montclair will close within the coming weeks as the Michigan-based bookseller heads into Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Stores in Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga and Rancho Mirage will remain open, at least for now.

The Borders Group, which operates about 650 Borders and Waldenbooks locations around the country, announced today it has filed for bankruptcy after earlier rounds of store closures, layoffs and other belt-tightening failed to combat a downturn in business from a bad economy and increasing competition from Amazon and other sources.

As part of the reorganization, the company said it will close 200 stores nationwide. Thirty-five of them are slated for California.

Inland Borders bookstores scheduled to close are in the Chino Spectrum Town Center, Chino; Eastvale Gateway in Mira Loma; and Perimeter Plaza in Montclair. The stores will be shuttered by the end of April, the company said.

Stores in several high profile areas are scheduled to close, including Borders stores in Glendale near the Galleria, in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, and in San Francisco's Union Square.

Mira Loma, CA: Borders lays off 310, closes one of three distribution centers

In its intensifying effort to show creditors it means business, or at least to stay in business, Borders announced yesterday that it’s firing the 310 people who work at its distribution center in LaVergne, Tennessee, and closing operations there.

According to a report from Nashville’s WKRN, the company released a statement saying it was all part of its “long-term plan to enhance the efficiency of its distribution network and reduce operating expenses."

The statement said the company had realized it had “excess capacity in its distribution network and requires only two distribution centers to process and ship inventory to stores.”

That means that the company no longer has a distribution center fulfilling orders in the middle of the country, and will now be relying on its two remaining distribution centers in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Mira Loma, California.

Linens 'n Things to Close 57 Underperforming Stores; 1 in Eastvale Gateway.

CLIFTON, N.J.--Linens Holding Co. (“LNT” or the “Company”), today announced that as part of its ongoing financial restructuring, the Company plans to close fewer than the previously disclosed 87 underperforming stores. The actual number of store closings is now 57 (See list below). LNT filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code on May 2, 2008 and announced the closing of 120 stores at that time.

“The reduced number of store closings is the result of improvements in the outlook for these stores throughout the remainder of 2008 into 2009. We are pleased that we are able to keep additional stores open for the benefit of our guests, associates, vendors and the communities we serve,” said Michael F. Gries, Chief Restructuring Officer and Interim CEO. “While a very difficult decision, the stores that are closing are necessary given the current retail and economic climate and the need to drive the cost savings and operational efficiencies that will allow us to position LNT for long-term growth."

Cannes 08: "Changeling." Mira Loma gets its spotlight!

A cloche-wearing madonna, Angelina Jolie is the porcelain personification of trembling courage and devoted motherhood in "Changeling." As Christine Collins, entire scenes exist solely for the world's most famous collector of international orphans to allow her eyes to well up as, clutching her hands over her mouth, she gives in to despair of ever finding Walter, her kidnapped son. Other times, the facade shatters and she shrieks "He's not my son! He's not my son!" Or "Did you kill my son?! Did you kill my son?!" Or "No! No! No!" Someone actually refers to her as having "moxie," which is something you were allowed to say without airquotes in the 1920s, when the film is set, but which isn't so accurate — mostly she picturesquely suffers and droops and then lifts her chin and enlists the help offered her by those who'd like to use her case as a weapon against the corrupt Los Angeles Police Department.

"Changeling" is director Clint Eastwood at his most manipulative, leagues beyond "Million Dollar Baby." The film's based on the actual Wineville Chicken Murders, in which Gordon Stewart Northcott kidnapped and killed at least three boys on his ranch in what's now Mira Loma. One of the boys was 10-year-old Walter Collins, who was at the heart of a scandal surrounding the case — after he was reported missing, the L.A.P.D. found another child who claimed to be Walter. When Christine Collins, Walter's mother, denied that boy was her son, the police had her sent to the county psych ward. It's an intriguing set-up, none the least because, as the film shows it, Christine at first dazedly lets herself be convinced that the boy could hers after all. But "Changeling" can't allow its characters to appear to be made of flesh and blood — Jeffrey Donovan, as the police captain who finds "Walter" eventually has Christine committed, might as well be vamping in a black cape. John Malkovich is ever a-tremble with indignation as the crusading Reverend Briegleb, who comes to Christine's rescue. Christine is a saintly single mother with a spotless house and a modish but demure wardrobe who wakes up already in full make-up, who tirelessly dotes on her darling child and who supports them both as a skillful supervisor at the phone company switchboard. "Changeling" doesn't want to tell a story — it wants to be a portrait of a conquering heroine trampling on injustice, and not that of a realistic and wronged woman who was in danger of getting ground in the gears of a dishonest and powerful organization. Given that Christine's great moments of triumph are those of enduring mistreatment, however, the intermittent faux feminist sentiments seem drearily misplaced. And like most true stories, "Changeling"' has no clean ending, struggles through what feels like an anticlimax in search of closure and settling on an ill-favored exchange of dialogue that I'd have called the worst in the festival until I saw "Surveillance" this morning (more on that in a bit).

With its star, its varnished vintage appearance and the ability to generate bewildering reviews like this one, "Changeling" is a picture all but created to win Academy Awards. Maybe it will, but hell if it deserves any. For the awards show clip, I'd suggest the scene where Christine visits the killer in prison, unnecessary to the plot and the film as a whole except as an opportunity to show off more of Jolie's histrionic emoting. It might as well be useful for something.

"Changeling" will be released in the U.S. by November 7th.

Supervisors won't back Jurupa district on seizing Calvert property (aka 'How Ken Calvert Stole Christmas')

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday dealt a setback to a Jurupa-area park district's efforts to gain ownership of 4 acres sold to Rep. Ken Calvert and his partners in a disputed transaction.

Supervisor John Tavaglione, whose Second District includes the Jurupa area, urged his board colleagues to vote down the request by the Jurupa Area Recreation and Park District to allow the use of eminent domain to seize the land.

The vote was 5-0.

Tavaglione chastised the park district and the Jurupa Community Services District, which sold the land to the Calvert partnership without the state-required notification to other governmental agencies that the Limonite Avenue property was on the market. The park district has sought the land since at least 2001 as the site for a park or a youth sports field.

Tavaglione said he was unhappy that the long-feuding districts appeared to be trying to drag supervisors into the land dispute.

"The community deserves better," he said.

Eminent domain is the process by which a government agency can acquire private property for public use by paying fair market value. If negotiations with the property owner fail, the case goes to court and the owner can be forced to sell.

Dan Rodriguez, the park district's general manager, said he was poised to fill out a speaker's request form to address supervisors Tuesday when he noticed that the item was listed on the consent calendar, which is always approved as a block item.

"The supervisor pulled the item, he spoke, they voted on it and it was a done deal," Rodriguez said. "I was truly surprised."

Calvert, R-Corona, reached at his Washington D.C. office, said he shared Tavaglione's sense that he was being drawn into a local dispute against his will.

"I feel like I'm in the middle of a circular firing squad," Calvert said, adding that he hoped the two districts would be able to settle their differences.

Calvert and his partners want to build a ministorage facility on the property.

Rodriguez said the park district board will call a special meeting on Jan. 3 to weigh its options in closed session.

The Jurupa district provides parks, arenas and recreation services to the unincorporated west Riverside County communities of Mira Loma, Glen Avon, Pedley, Sunnyslope and Rubidoux.
The Riverside County grand jury concluded last summer that the community services district did not follow state law and recommended that the district turn over to the park district the $1.2 million it received from the sale.

The community services district has maintained all along that it did nothing improper.
