Representatives from Riverside County agencies will attend the Temescal Valley Municipal Advisory Council meeting July 11 to answer questions and provide information to Temescal Valley residents about the city of Corona’s ongoing proposal to annex their community. Temescal Valley is currently within the city’s sphere of influence.

Riverside, CA: Man Sentenced for Setting Girlfriend

A Santa Ana man who doused his 23-year-old girlfriend in gasoline and set her aflame while driving on a freeway near Corona was sentenced today to 15 years and four months behind bars.

Constantino Monterrosas Gamez, 39, pleaded guilty last week to attempted murder, making criminal threats, false imprisonment and a sentence-enhancing great bodily injury allegation for the July 15 attack on Jessica Munoz.

Corona, CA: Cleveland National Forest announces elevated fire restrictions for Corona and Temecula areas

Cleveland National Forest announced that elevated fire restrictions were imposed yesterday in the Corona and Temecula areas of Riverside County as the dry "forest fire season" looms closer.

The heightened restrictions are because of "dryer fuel conditions, higher temperatures and the likelihood of small fires becoming large fires," Cleveland National Forest Public Affairs Officer Brian Harris said.

Corona, CA: Calvert To Seek 42nd District Congressional Seat

The newly redrawn 42nd District includes Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Eastvale, Norco, Corona, a portion of Temecula and eight unincorporated communities.

Yesterday, Congressman Ken Calvert, R-Corona, announced his intention to seek election to the 42nd Congressional District.

The newly redrawn 42nd Congressional District--as finalized today by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission--includes the cities of Eastvale, Norco, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, Menifee, Murrieta and a portion of Temecula.

First elected to Congress in 1992, Calvert, 58, currently serves the 44th Congressional District.

"The largest city in the 42nd District is my hometown of Corona and I have had the pleasure of representing all of the communities in the district at one time or another during my time in public service," Rep. Calvert said in an emailed statement.

"I am honored to represent my constituents in the House of Representatives and I look forward to asking for their vote once again next year."

The 42nd District also includes the unincorporated ares of El Sobrante, Woodcrest, Temescal Valley, Lakeview, Nuevo, Homeland, Winchester and Aguanga.

Redistricting takes Murrieta out of the 45th Congressional District--currently represented by Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs--as of 2012.

A small portion of Murrieta is also currently in the 49th District, represented by Darrell Issa, R-Vista.

The new boundaries combine Murrieta into one district.

Corona, CA: Teens Identified As Plane Crash Victims

Matt Shope, 18, of Long Beach, and Pedro Torres, 19, of Pomona, died in the July 23 crash.

The victims of a deadly July 23 plane crash just outside the Cleveland National Forest in Corona near Lake Elsinore were identified by the coronor’s office today as two teenagers.

Matt Shope, 18, of Long Beach, and Pedro Torres, 19, of Pomona, were killed in the crash that was reported around 10:30 a.m. July 23 in Joseph Canyon, Corona, near the 4000 block of Suzie Circle.

The teens were the only people aboard the plane; it is not clear which of the two was piloting the aircraft.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said age was not an issue.

The two teens were found in the wreckage but their identities were withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The small fixed-wind single-engine craft disintegrated upon impact and sparked a fire that scorched an acre of open-space hillside.

The plane was destroyed, FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said.

“There were only pieces left," said Thomas Rosales, whose Corona home looks out over the crash site.

Firefighters quickly put out a one-acre blaze caused by the deadly crash.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

According to the FAA Registry, the downed plane was manufactured by American Aviation in 1971, and the engine was manufactured by Lycoming.

The registered owner of the small aircraft is Rays F Inc. out of Carson City, Nevada, according to the FAA Registry.

Corona, CA: Teacher's aide who sought sex with girl gets probation

A former Corona-Norco Unified School District teacher's aide who sought to have sexual relations with a teenage girl he met on MySpace.com was sentenced today to three years probation and nearly six months in a work-release program.

Paul Benjamin Records, 28, was convicted Feb. 8 of attempted lewd or lascivious acts on a child. He was also charged with communicating with a minor with the intent to solicit sex, but jurors deadlocked on that count, leading Riverside County Superior Court Judge Michael Donner to dismiss it.

After considering a probation officer's pre-sentencing report and letters of support from Records' family, Donner decided to impose probation and a 180-day jail sentence. However, the judge granted the defendant the option of participating in a labor program managed by the sheriff's department, rather than serving time behind bars.

Records was a substitute class aide at the time of his arrest in July 2009. The Lake Matthews man came to the attention of Corona police after the parents of a 15-year-old girl -- referred to in court papers as "Brittany" -- alleged the defendant had been carrying on an inappropriate relationship with her via the Internet and telephone.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Romney told jurors that Records persuaded the teen to send him lingerie and topless pictures of herself and encouraged her to masturbate, instructing her on "where to put her hands and fingers."

The defendant sent explicit photos of himself to the teen in exchange for the nude ones of her, according to the prosecutor.

"This case is exactly how kids end up with nude photos in cyberspace," Romney said.

According to Romney, Records also solicited explicit photos from five other girls, one of whom sent a picture of herself masturbating.

Defense attorney Frank Peasley acknowledged his client's behavior was "downright disgusting" at times, but argued most of the violations alleged by the prosecution did not occur.

According to the attorney, Records told the girl up-front that he was in his 20s and that their relationship could not go beyond friendship.

Peasley said Records had several opportunities to meet Brittany in person to complete the attempted lewd acts alleged, but he consistently turned down the invitations.

"He (was) foolin' around on the Internet," the attorney told jurors.

Corona, CA: Corona gang member sentenced for attacking deputies

A Corona gang member who attacked two Riverside County correctional deputies, slashing one's neck, during an attack at the downtown Riverside jail was sentenced today to 157 years to life in prison.

Jose Ageo Amaya, 28, will serve the sentence handed down by Superior Court Judge Samuel Diaz in addition to a life prison term previously imposed for a carjacking and attempted murder for which the defendant was convicted in March 2006.

Amaya, a member of the Corona Varrio Locos street gang, was jailed in February 2004 following his arrest for forcibly taking a man's car and stabbing the victim three times in the back, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The defendant was awaiting sentencing for that crime in June 2007 when he attacked the two deputies, said D.A.'s spokesman John Hall.

He said the gang member refused orders to return to his cell at the Robert Presley Detention Center one day and "pulled a shank from his pocket, slashing the neck of one of the deputies."

"After a violent struggle with assisting deputies, Amaya was apprehended," Hall said.

The defendant was convicted Nov. 24 of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal street gang activity and two counts of being a prisoner in possession of a deadly weapon.

Corona, CA: Registered sex offender arrested in Corona on felony charges

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, shortly after 7:00 AM, members of Riverside County’s multi-agency Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force served a search warrant at a residence located in the 1000 block of Circle City Dr., Corona, following a several-months-long investigation into the activities of Corona-area registered sex offender Albert Stephenson, age 30. SAFE Task Force officers subsequently booked Stephenson at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Robert Presley Detention Center on felony charges related to his failure to properly register his address of residence with the Corona Police Department.

Lengthy investigation leading up to Stephenson’s arrest revealed his true Corona residence despite his having falsely registered a residential address in the City of Orange with the Orange Police Department.

The SAFE Task Force is comprised of law enforcement personnel from agencies spanning Riverside County, all focused on reducing incidents of sexual assault County-wide by means of comprehensive registered sex offender monitoring and enforcement. Lake Elsinore, CA: Boyfriend arrested in IE missing woman case

LAKE ELSINORE, CA: A sex offender who is the boyfriend of a missing Lake Elsinore woman was arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Police said 33-year-old Tanya Petro was last seen leaving her apartment complex with her boyfriend, Ronald Paoletto.

Paoletto was arrested Monday for violation of parole.

Petro is still missing. Her family told police that Paoletto had physically assaulted her last week.

The couple was supposed to pick up Paoletto's children in Yucca Valley, but Paoletto arrived alone.

Paoletto said he and Petro had argued on the drive and he left her at an unknown location.

Lake Elsinore, CA: It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's parachute jumpers lighting up the nighttime sky at Lake Elsinore

Skydivers taking a nighttime jump over Lake Elsinore prompted nearby residents to call authorities about fireballs falling from the sky, authorities said Friday.

Emergency dispatchers were “inundated with calls” Thursday night, reporting something in the sky around the lake area, said Cheri Patterson, spokeswoman with the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

“There were varying reports of what people thought they were seeing and an increased number of 911 calls,” she said.

It turned out to be skydivers making their jumps while holding flares, said Melissa Nieburger, a spokeswoman with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff's deputies heard the skydivers were members of the U.S. Army Parachute Team, more commonly known as the Golden Knights, she said.

Skydiving daredevils break world record: A group of international daredevils has set a new world record in a skydive over Lake Elsinore in California.

The 71 divers from across the world assembled in the largest ever mid-air formation in the short history of wing-suiting - a variation on skydiving in which participants wear specially designed suits that slow down their fall to the ground.

The "wings" on wing-suits also allow the wearer to gain more control over their fall, giving them the sensation of flying horizontally as well as dropping vertically.

The group, who smashed the previous record of 16 wing-suiters, jumped from planes at 14,500 ft. They travelled almost three miles in a few minutes, moving at horizontal speeds of 100 mph and vertical speeds of 68 mph and were positioned just three metres apart.

They spent five days practising for the world record attempt, going through 30 dry-runs before the main event on Wednesday.

Justin Shorb, the group's organiser and wing captain, said: "It looks amazing and its a really good feeling to achieve this."

"We have people at this event from 6 continents including jumpers from UK, South Africa, Europe. I put my team through hell to get this to work ... to see their faces and to hear their screams and cheers when we announced that we did it, it was the most amazing accomplishment I have ever felt. It was awesome."

Mr Shorb, 27, from Boston, explained: "All 71 sky-divers were separated in four aircraft, named A, B, C and D. We had them lined up one in front of the other at 14,500 ft.

"At that height, every plane opened its door at the same time and we would all climb out and hold onto the side of the plane ready to jump. As soon as the jumpers in the second plane jumped, everybody followed.

"From the first person to the last person to exit the plane was roughly seven seconds."

Chino Hills Woman Woman who lost leg awarded $4.3M

A Southern California jury said a woman that lost her leg in a boating accident on Lake Havasu is entitled to $4.3 million.

The decision was reached Thursday in a West Valley Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

The jury declared that Johnson Marine Supplies, Inc. was responsible for the Aug. 7, 2004 accident that cost Stacey Lowery of Chino Hills, Calif. her leg.

The accident occurred when Lowery’s husband attempted to put the boat in reverse but instead it went forward, crushing Lowery’s leg between the boat and a cement seawall. The leg had to be amputated.

The jury agreed with the Lowery’s contention that the boat had a retainer clip that was improperly installed.

UPDATE: Off-Duty Officer Involved in Shooting

Los Angeles: An off-duty LAPD officer was involved in a shooting in an unincorporated area of Lake Elsinore.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, on Monday, August 25, 2008, at around 3:45 p.m., Police Officer Antonio Mendez, 2 years with the Department, was involved in a traffic collision with a man driving a gray Toyota Tundra. The traffic collision took place on the northbound I-15 freeway near Indian Truck Trail. After the impact, the Toyota Tundra continued to accelerate at a high rate of speed as Mendez followed. The Toyota exited the freeway at Dos Lagos Drive and pulled into a parking lot at Temescal Canyon Road. Both drivers exited their vehicle and a verbal confrontation ensued. Mendez attempted to detain the suspect and there was an officer involved shooting. A single round was fired striking the Toyota’s driver in the upper body.

Officer Mendez is currently assigned to the Office of Operations.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation. The Los Angeles Police Department, Force Investigation Division is handling the Administrative Investigation and the California Highway Patrol is handling all traffic related investigations.
