Corona, CA: Calvert To Seek 42nd District Congressional Seat

The newly redrawn 42nd District includes Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Eastvale, Norco, Corona, a portion of Temecula and eight unincorporated communities.

Yesterday, Congressman Ken Calvert, R-Corona, announced his intention to seek election to the 42nd Congressional District.

The newly redrawn 42nd Congressional District--as finalized today by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission--includes the cities of Eastvale, Norco, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, Menifee, Murrieta and a portion of Temecula.

First elected to Congress in 1992, Calvert, 58, currently serves the 44th Congressional District.

"The largest city in the 42nd District is my hometown of Corona and I have had the pleasure of representing all of the communities in the district at one time or another during my time in public service," Rep. Calvert said in an emailed statement.

"I am honored to represent my constituents in the House of Representatives and I look forward to asking for their vote once again next year."

The 42nd District also includes the unincorporated ares of El Sobrante, Woodcrest, Temescal Valley, Lakeview, Nuevo, Homeland, Winchester and Aguanga.

Redistricting takes Murrieta out of the 45th Congressional District--currently represented by Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs--as of 2012.

A small portion of Murrieta is also currently in the 49th District, represented by Darrell Issa, R-Vista.

The new boundaries combine Murrieta into one district.

Canyon Lake News Update!

A penguin party tomorrow!
Norma Horrocks will sign her full-color pictorial children’s book, “Early Bird – Late Bird,” tomorrow, May 17, from noon to 6 p.m. at Canyon Lake Nails and Spa in the Towne Center (located next to Dominoes Pizza). The story is a fictionalized, fact-based story about the lives of a penguin family on an Antarctic peninsula.

According to Norma, salon owner Lesa Bellows is going all out to create a festive “penguin” atmosphere with decorations and refreshments for tomorrow’s event. Norma will also sign her recently released travel book, "I Haven't Been Everywhere – But It's On My List."

Armed Forces Day
Residents are invited to attend Armed Forces Day tomorrow, May 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran School, 26800 Newport Rd. in Menifee. There will be various activities, food and a concert to salute veterans and those currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Bingo this Sunday
The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo on the first and third Sundays of each month starting at 1 p.m. and ending at approximately 4 p.m., in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next session will be held May 18. Bring a new guest and receive a $10 game card for free.

Rotary Rumble fundraiser
The second annual Lake Elsinore Rotary Rumble motorcycle ride will take place tomorrow, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. The ride will start at 520 Chaney St. in Lake Elsinore and, after touring the Santa Rosa area, will end at Quaid Temecula Harley Davidson for lunch and drawings for prizes. The grand prize is a 2008 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle valued at over $22,000. DAR meeting
The Daughters of the American Revolution, Luiseno Chapter, will meet on Tuesday, May 27 at 1:30 p.m., at the Sizzler Restaurant, 40489 Murrieta Hot Springs Rd., Murrieta.
Mrs. Paula-Jo Cahoon, a member of the California State Society of the DAR Speakers Staff, will present “Women in the Korean War.” Everyone is invited to the luncheon, especially those who are interested in tracing their heritage to ancestors of the American Revolution. Caregiver support group
Caregiver Connection Support Group meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in room D 140. Because of the holiday, the next meeting is May 19. The Caregivers Connection is a support group for caregivers and their patients. Child advocates needed
The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program, which speaks for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts. It promotes and supports quality volunteer representation for children to provide safe, permanent, nurturing homes.

As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course.

Tennis scholarships
The Canyon Lake Tennis Club will once again be awarding two $500 scholarships this year, one each to a male and female high school senior. To be eligible for the scholarships, the seniors must be 2008 graduating students at Temescal Canyon, Lakeside or Elsinore High School, as well as a member of the school’s tennis team.

To apply, seniors are asked to submit an essay (two pages minimum) describing what tennis has meant to them during their high school years, what their plans are for the future and how they will use the scholarship money. Scholarships will be awarded at the Temescal Canyon awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 28.

Home Owners Club scholarships
Applications for Canyon Lake Home Owners Club scholarships can be obtained at the TCHS Career Center. The deadline to return the applications to the Career Center is Thursday, May 22.

Join an investment club
Parties interested in joining an investment club in Canyon Lake should call 951-848-9122 for a three-minute recorded message. According to organizer Ron Emshoff, the Canyon Lake Investment Club will be a member of the National Association of Investors Corporation, a non-profit association with a membership of over 12,000 clubs. The club will take direction and bylaws from that association, along with the Better Investing Community and Bivio.

Each member must sign a partnership agreement and participate in decisions of the club, which is in need of several officers to fill vacancies. There is also a need for persons to do research. Each partner needs an e-mail address as most meetings and communications will be over the Internet.

Dyslexia workshop
A workshop and symposium sponsored by the Inland Empire Branch of the International Dyslexia Association will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 6:45 p.m., at Vintage Hills Elementary School in Temecula, 42240 Camino Romo Rd. The free workshop is open to anyone interested in learning more about the problems students with dyslexia and other learning differences face in the conventional classroom. Water Ski Hall of Fame
Canyon Laker Mike Murphy has been nominated for the Water Ski Hall of Fame because of his accomplishments as an inventor of the kneeboard and sit-down hydrofoil, among other innovative water ski-related products. He is best known as the “original hot-dogger” according to his nephew, Tony Klarich, who has created a 35-minute DVD that he hopes will get his uncle into the Hall of Fame. The DVD is available at Pack, Wrap and Post for a $5 donation, which will be given to the Heart to Heart Foundation.

Free Fiesta Day booth
The Canyon Lake Twirlers Square Dance Club is offering a well-built hexagon-shaped booth with an attractive blue canopy free to any local club or organization. The booth measures approximately 11 ft. across the flats of its six-sided shape and has narrow counter encircling the entire booth. The Twirlers used it for many years on Fiesta Day. Community carnival
The celebrate Recovery Ministry at Cornerstone Community Church in Wildomar is hosting a community carnival for all ages on Friday, June 27 from 5 to 10 p.m. Live music, food, games, a petting zoo, climbing wall, bounce houses and prize drawings are planned. Host families needed
Residents can add an international flavor to their household by hosting a foreign exchange student. The Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (AFICE) is seeking host families for the upcoming school year. All exchange students attend the public high school, speak English, have their own spending money and medical insurance. ‘Operation Recognition’
“Operation Recognition” allows residents of Riverside County who missed completing high school because of military service in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War – or because of internment in WWII Japanese-American relocation camps – to receive high school diplomas.

Hospital volunteers needed
Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking hospital volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on its site daily to meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Computer Club
The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. Club members meet at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, Q&A sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. It is a free club with no dues. Canyon Lake Lodge turns into a bit of Bourbon Street!

The comment was heard time and again Friday, “How will anyone ever top this?” as the doors to the Lodge opened and hundreds of women, with a sprinkling of men, converged on the Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show, hosted by the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club.

Led by Chairman Carol Bivens and Co-chair Bonnie Carnagey, those involved in hosting this massive event are too numerous to mention by name. From the contributors and organizers of door prizes, gift baskets, silent auction items and centerpieces to the catwalk and lighting design, massive mural on all four walls of the Holiday Bay Room and clothing modeled in the fashion show – and countless details in between – pictures will have to suffice to thank those involved.

The day began on the Lodge lawn, as a Dixieland band played and champagne and mimosas were served to those who arrived early. Attendees were greeted by women giving away Mardi Gras beads and selling tickets for different drawing opportunities, as well as by Mardi Gras Queen Cassie Boettcher.

Inside the Holiday Bay Room, the walls and windows were covered with black paper and painted by professional muralist Edmond Piffard, with festive Mardi Gras scenes enhanced by the sparkle of real beads, sequins and coins, glittery fabric and colorful balloons.

Fashion providers included Canyon Lake Pro Shop, Canyon Lake Towne Center, Coldwater Creek, Group USA, Johncee’s Closet, Ontario Mills and The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos. Jewelry was by Coldwater Creek and Cookie Lee. The “Opportunity Quilt 2008” was created over many months and donated by the Quilters Dozen for a separate drawing. The $2,500 grand prize was donated by Canyon Lake Travel.

Canyon Lake: Upcoming parties will raise money to help kids

Two fundraiser parties, one for children and one for adults, are being sponsored by Canyon Lakers and former Canyon Lakers to help children.

'First Candle' fundraiser at Pump It Up

The first “party,” specifically designed for children and their parents, will be held Thursday, April 17, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., and Friday, April 18, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. at “Pump it Up,” the inflatable party zone at 41785 Elm St., Ste. 203, in Murrieta.

Sponsored by Pump it Up and the Hanna family in memory of Jackson Fischer Hanna, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the fundraiser will benefit First Candle SIDS Research (sidsalliance.org).

According to Jackson’s mother, Jamie Hanna, the admission donation of $10 per child will provide unlimited play in both arenas in addition to pizza and drinks. Because space is limited, prepaid reservations are required by calling 677-1933.

Jamie and her husband Mark lost their baby to SIDS in July 2006 when he was three months old. They were Canyon Lake residents at the time and held a private memorial. Since recently moving to Temecula, Jamie remains active with Canyon Lake Mommy and Me. Although Jackson’s loss is still an emotional memory, she says the family wants to commemorate what would have been his 2nd birthday with a special party for parents and children to benefit SIDS research.

'Cam Power West' at Pala Casino

The second party will benefit a little girl who lives nowhere near Canyon Lake but is sponsored by family members here who love her dearly. The little girl, Cameron Diamond, is the niece of Gil and Diane Guillen.

Gil and Diane lived in Canyon Lake almost 20 years and made Cameron’s plight known to their many friends and neighbors when she was diagnosed with leukemia soon after her birth in April 2000. Over the years, Cameron has faced one medical emergency after another, but she now faces the biggest challenge of all – a lung transplant.

To support her family while they are staying with Cameron in the ICU unit of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Gil and Diane, as well as Canyon Lakers Jim and Jen Ayres (Gil and Diane’s daughter) and Keith Ayers are hosting “Cam Power West,” a dinner and auction, at the Pala Resort and Casino on Saturday, April 19. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:30.

At a cost of $75 per person, the party will feature dinner, live entertainment and dancing and a live and silent auction of over 50 items, including a guitar signed by all the band members of Maroon 5. Only 200 spots are available at the party; make reservations by April 4 by calling Diane Guillen at 909-815-6240. Diane says they are seeking additional items for the auction and drawing and would welcome a call about those, too. Two fundraisers at Monteleone Meadows

The owners of Monteleone Meadows were so moved by the story of young Mackenzie Monteleone (no relation to the family) and the damage to her brain caused in a golf cart accident last November, they offered their grounds for a fundraising event on May 3. It will be called the “Pink Tie Affair.”

Mackenzie’s family used to live in Canyon Lake. The injuries she sustained left her in a persistent vegetative state and family members continue to seek new avenues of treatment, leading them to obtain stem cell injections at a clinic in China for a cost of $25,000. The trip to do that is scheduled for June.

Among the many things planned for the “Pink Tie Affair” is a silent auction. Individuals or businesses who would like to donate items or services would be greatly appreciated. Six Canyon Lake kids will be recipients of camp scholarships from Community Outreach Ministry at an inaugural fundraiser luncheon at Monteleone Meadows in Murrieta on Sunday, May 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Youngsters will speak at the luncheon about their opportunity for a life-changing experience. The cost is $20 and proceeds from the benefit luncheon will provide “solutions, opportunities and scholarships” (SOS) for at-risk kids.

During the luncheon, Lovee’s Bridal of Temecula will have top-of-the-line designer dresses for special occasions for sale at low prices, with all proceeds benefiting SOS. Lori Stone-Rubin with the Riverside County Board of Supervisors will be a special speaker. There will also be drawings and door prizes.
