For the 10 th year, there will be a Free Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at Silverado Burgers & Mexican Food 1091 6th Street Norco, Ca 92860 from 11 am - 3 pm on Thanksgiving Day November 22, 2012. Everyone is invited. Country Band - Hillbilly Reign will be performing. This dinner since its start 10 years ago - has served thousands of folks. It has served folks from all over the region, some driving over 40 miles to come have a nice meal. We have served folks who do not have the ability to have a nice meal, some who do not have anyone to spend the holiday with, and many working during the holiday such as Law Enforcement, Fire, E.M.S. Crews, and many more working the holiday. Last years attendance was 724 folks and it grows annually, especially this year with current difficult economic times and unemployment rates. What makes this dinner unique is it is not run by any organization.

Corona, CA: Corona man dies in custody after being restrained and tasered

A 27-year-old Corona man who had been put in four-point restraints and shocked with a Taser died in sheriff's custody in Norco today, the man's aunt said.

Anthony Lawson was arrested about 1:30 a.m. near 7462 Citrus Valley Ave. and "hogtied," his aunt, who identified herself only as Darline, told City News Service.

The sheriff's department did not have anyone available for comment early today.

Corona, CA: Pursuit after domestic violence dispute ends in arrest

On August 31, 2011, deputies from the Norco Office of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department responded to the 3000 block of Valley View Ave in the City of Norco regarding a domestic violence incident.

Upon arrival, the victim advised responding deputies that her ex-husband (separated), Jaime Sanchez of Corona, CA, had come to her residence uninvited twice during the evening in an attempt to contact her. The second time Sanchez arrived, he forced his way inside the residence and confronted the victim, as well as her children and a visiting family member, brandishing a knife in his hand. Sanchez demanded the cell phones from both the victim and a young family member so they could not call the police.

Corona, CA: Calvert To Seek 42nd District Congressional Seat

The newly redrawn 42nd District includes Murrieta, Menifee, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, Eastvale, Norco, Corona, a portion of Temecula and eight unincorporated communities.

Yesterday, Congressman Ken Calvert, R-Corona, announced his intention to seek election to the 42nd Congressional District.

The newly redrawn 42nd Congressional District--as finalized today by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission--includes the cities of Eastvale, Norco, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, Menifee, Murrieta and a portion of Temecula.

First elected to Congress in 1992, Calvert, 58, currently serves the 44th Congressional District.

"The largest city in the 42nd District is my hometown of Corona and I have had the pleasure of representing all of the communities in the district at one time or another during my time in public service," Rep. Calvert said in an emailed statement.

"I am honored to represent my constituents in the House of Representatives and I look forward to asking for their vote once again next year."

The 42nd District also includes the unincorporated ares of El Sobrante, Woodcrest, Temescal Valley, Lakeview, Nuevo, Homeland, Winchester and Aguanga.

Redistricting takes Murrieta out of the 45th Congressional District--currently represented by Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs--as of 2012.

A small portion of Murrieta is also currently in the 49th District, represented by Darrell Issa, R-Vista.

The new boundaries combine Murrieta into one district.

Corona, CA: Freeway widening to affect hundreds of properties

A handful of property owners in Corona are in early negotiations to sell their property and make way for the county's most expensive freeway widening project.

Officials in charge of the $1.3 billion Highway 91 project said they might need to purchase part or all of about 400 residential and business properties in Circle City, a number that includes temporary uses and could vary depending on the final plan.

"Some of the businesses were early, willing sellers. They actually wanted their buildings bought because they wanted to move on," Corona Councilman Eugene Montanez said.

About 80 of those properties are needed for the project regardless of which design is chosen, said John Standiford, deputy director of the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

The project would extend two toll lanes on the 91 from the Orange County line to McKinley Street in Corona. Officials are waiting on a $446 million loan from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund the four-year project, which would start in 2013.

Montanez said more businesses than residences are expected to be affected.

"In the Lincoln Avenue and Pomona Road area, there are a whole string of businesses that are going to be relocated or moved because Pomona Road is going to be reconstructed. That's probably the single biggest impact," Montanez said.

The popular restaurant Mill Creek on Lincoln Avenue is one of those businesses.

"They are going to be completely taken away. They're probably the most visible one that is a complete taking," Montanez said.

Most homes that would have to be sold are scattered throughout the project area, with a few spots where more than one home sits, Standiford said.

The public can view a 22-foot map of the affected areas Thursday at a public hearing on a draft environmental impact report.

The meeting is from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Corona Civic Center, 502 S. Vicentia Ave.

The area of Norco in the study area includes land adjacent to Interstate 15 from Hidden Valley Parkway to Fifth Street.

Norco Mayor Berwin Hanna said he doesn't have any major concerns about the project severely affecting the city, other than minor traffic.

"I imagine we'll all be impacted from the construction," Hanna said.

English and Spanish notices of the public hearing were sent to everyone within a 500-foot radius of the project, said Robert Morin, Corona principal civil engineer and project liaison.

"It's impacting both sides of the freeway from the 15 to Auto Center Drive," Morin said.

Norco, CA: Jersey Mike's brings sub shops to the Inland Empire

Jersey Mike's Subs, a sandwich chain with more than 500 stores across the U.S., is opening its first store in Norco June 8.

It is also the chain's first Inland location, according to the company website. A second will open soon in Rancho Cucamonga.

Errol Talley, owner of the Norco franchise, is celebrating the Inland debut with two fundraising events.

The first, which runs June 8-12, will benefit the Blues Youth Soccer Club. Talley plans to distribute more than 5,000 fundraising coupons in the community, offering the bearer a free regular-size sub when he or she brings in the coupon and makes a $1 donation to the cause.

The second fundraiser will run Aug. 1-15 and will work the same way, with more than 3,500 coupons distributed. It will benefit Norco Unified School District.

The store, located at 1411 Hamner Ave., in the Marketplace on Hamner, will be Talley's first Jersey Mike's location.

Jersey Mike's, headquartered in Manasquan, N.J., has 55 stores in California, nearly all of them spread through Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. But the franchises appear to be moving away from the coast; the most recent opening in California was a store in Bakersfield.

Norco, CA: Scott Starr Pulls the Trigger for the Trojans

Never let it be said that a bit of bad news dissuades Lane Kiffin, Ed Orgeron or the Trojans when it comes time to get down to business.

Despite the unwelcome news that the NCAA denied USC's appeal related to the Reggie Bush sanctions—thus keeping the Trojans 10 scholarships short for the next three years—Kiffin and company just keep rolling on.

The latest evidence of this is the verbal commitment of Norco, Calif. linebacker, Scott Starr, as reported by Scout.com.

In Starr, the Trojans get a 4-star linebacker (as rated by Scout.com) whose athleticism and determination have made him one of the most coveted 'backers on the west coast.

Possessing an excellent frame (6'3") and good size (225 lbs.), Starr has the physical tools to get the job done.

But what really excites Trojan coaches is his athletic ability.

Fast (4.55 sec. 40-yard dash) and explosive, Starr is relentless in his pursuit of the ball.

And for young Scott, this is a dream come true.

According to an article by Scout's Brandon Huffman, Starr was quoted as saying he had wanted to be a Trojan since the fifth grade.

Now he will get that chance.

For USC, this signing once again shows that despite the tribulations that the NCAA is heaping on their program, the Trojans will persevere.

Undaunted, USC just keeps plowing ahead and for those who are recruiting against the Trojans, it must be maddening.

Corona, CA: Four Calif. men receive heroism awards

Four California men are among 20 winners of Carnegie medals for heroism.

Fifty-6-year-old Michael Noriega of Manhattan Beach helped to save 92-year-old Lucille Meistrell from a house fire in Manhattan Beach in November 2009.

Thirty-2-year-old David Braga of Modesto saved a 1-year-old girl from an apartment fire in Merced in February 2010.

And 47-year-old Roger Randolph Lang of Corona and 41-year-old Theophilus Joseph of San Bernardino rescued a woman from an assault in Norco, Calif., in April 2009.

The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced the honors for individuals from the United States and Canada who risked their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.

Carnegie medalists, or their heirs, receive financial grants. More than $33.1 million has been awarded to over 9,400 honorees since the fund's inception in 1904.

Norco, CA: Norco council opposes high-speed train route through city

The Norco City Council, which considers the proposed San Francisco to San Diego high-speed train a threat to the city's animal-keeping lifestyle, approved a resolution Wednesday opposing a route through Norco.

In preliminary studies, the Inland Empire segment would run from Ontario International Airport through March Air Reserve Base near Riverside to a station in Murrieta. Two alternative routes wound send the train through Norco to a station at the Dos Lagos shopping center in southern Corona, and then on to Murrieta, bypassing Riverside.

One Norco route would go down the Hamner Avenue commercial district and another would be in the middle of or adjacent to Interstate 15. A report prepared for the High-Speed Rail Authority's meeting today in Los Angeles proposes dropping the Hamner route because of environmental concerns.

But Councilwoman Kathy Azevedo, who said the train "will take out the city of Norco" when she proposed the resolution, is still concerned.

Running the train down the middle of I-15 would make it impossible to widen the interstate, she said. Running it alongside I-15 would take out Hamner on one side and displace houses on the other.

"We feel that March Air Force Base is much better not only for Norco but the region," Azevedo said. "If they're going through Riverside, there's a much bigger population base."

The Rail Authority today will be asked to approve a list of routes and stations for further study. Rachel Wall, the Rail Authority's press secretary, said by phone on Tuesday the Los Angeles to San Diego routes will be studied for environmental effects for at least the next three years before a choice is made. The route isn't scheduled for completion until 2030.

The Hamner route was recommended for rejection because of a threat to the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly and problems with the right of way, the report said. The authors of the report found some concerns that the Hamner and I-15 routes share: community noise and visual impacts; and effects on equestrian trails and the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve.

Wall said the effects of noise can be lessened by design elements, including sound tunnels such as those that are used in Spain.

Norco's resolution will be forwarded to the Rail Authority, and Azevedo said she will press her case with the Riverside Council of Governments.

The route issue is pitting Azevedo against one of her friends, Corona Councilwoman Karen Spiegel, a proponent of the Corona station and the I-15 route.

"Any time there is progress and change, somebody sees themselves as being the hurt ones," Spiegel said by phone Tuesday. "I do not think it's going to destroy Norco. I think it will change Norco, but so did the 15 freeway."

Countered Azevedo: "How could she know that when the route hasn't been determined?"

Norco, CA: DR.D Rider Bobby Garrison Wins Primm WORCS

Norco, CA: Dubach Racing Development (DR.D) congratulates Bobby Garrison on winning the second round of the World Off-road Racing Championship Series (WORCS) held in Primm Valley, Nevada.

Garrison, a privateer, put his DR.D-backed Kawasaki KX450F on the top step of the championship podium, with his hard charging, never say die riding style. Having to kick his bike over a few times before it would fire during the dead engine start format, Garrison came from behind passing all factory supported riders to claim victories in both main events. With this victory, Garrison sits atop the WORCS series point's standings.
