Corona, CA: Stanford Inks 22 On National Signing Day

Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw announced today that 22 high school seniors have signed official national letters of intent to play football at Stanford University next fall.

The 22 student-athletes attend high school in 14 states--California (3), Texas (3), Arizona (3), Florida (2) and Washington (2), along with one player each from the states of Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia and Utah.

By position, the Cardinal added seven offensive linemen, five defensive linemen, four wide receivers, three defensive backs, two linebackers and one running back to its roster. One player is also listed as a tight end, as well as a defensive end.

A high school wrestling coach in Corona is being accused of bullying and harassing a freshman student on his team.

13-year-old Centennial High School freshman Hunter Grijalva says he was humiliated by his coach at a practice on Monday.

Hunter says he had dropped his wrestling shorts on the way to the bus that morning.

Corona, CA: Football - A night to remember

On a night that was filled with incredibly good week-one matchups, I have to say St. Bonaventure and Corona Centennial put on the most compelling game. By the time week 14 comes around, I expect both schools to be competing for championships and bowl bids.

For St. Bonaventure to drive in from Ventura and come away with a 29-27 road victory over the Huskies was pretty stunning. And the way it happened, with running backs Zach Green and Shaun Wick each rushing for more than 100 yards, made the victory even more startling.

Corona, CA: Injured ASU linebacker Brandon Magee still upbeat

Injured first-team linebacker Brandon Magee has shown up at Arizona State's last few practices. Aside from the boot on his left foot, you'd never know he was out for the season.

"I'll always smile,'' said Magee, who tore his Achilles tendon during a scrimmage Aug 13. "I'm alive. I'm hurt, but I'll be back. There are people that go to war that lose legs ... so I'm just grateful that I'm blessed that I'll be able to play again."

Corona, CA: Boys' basketball: Gelaun Wheelwright doing his part for Corona Centennial

When it comes to three-point threats, Corona Centennial's Gelaun Wheelwright is one of the top perimeter marksmen in Southern California.

During the regular season, the Weber State-bound guard sank 67 three-pointers and shot 34% from beyond the arc while averaging 17.8 points per game. He also finished second in team rebounding, averaging 4.5 per game.

More important, Wheelwright has played a big role in the Huskies' first two playoff victories. He finished with 28 points during Corona Centennial's 97-65 victory over Great Oak on Wednesday before netting 15 points in a 59-55 victory over Los Alamitos in the second round Friday.

But Wheelwright will have to do more of the same Tuesday when the Huskies look to advance to the division semifinals for the first time since 2008 against a strong Upland team that knocked off Pasadena on Friday.

Corona, CA: National Signing Day 2011: ASU Commits Are Still Weighing Options

Uncertainty, wavering between decisions and intense anxiety are now at their peak.

With one week left before national signing day, coaching staffs are putting the finishing touches on their respective recruiting classes.

The wavering has not gone unnoticed in Tempe, AZ. as some of Arizona State’s most coveted recruits have rethought their status with the Sun Devils.

More importantly, these highly-regarded prospects are seeking better and a higher potential for success with other schools by switching their verbal commitments.

Originally, the Sun Devils were players in the Christian Westerman sweepstakes. Westerman, from Hamilton High School (Chandler, AZ), is ranked as the No. 1 offensive guard (Scout.com).

However, even as a local product, the Sun Devils were a long shot to land the All-American.

Auburn, just like many other out of state football programs, won the recruiting battle for a big-time offensive lineman.

Thus far, the Sun Devils have watched not only Westerman, but four other highly-ranked offensive linemen, commit to foreign schools.

For Dennis Erickson, uncertainty surrounds Cyrus Hobbi from Saguaro High School (Scottsdale, AZ), who is now considering both USC and UCLA over the hometown Devils.

Cyrus Hobbi has long been coveted by Erickson and ASU, but recently, USC and UCLA have taken the lead.

With in-home visits scheduled for next Tuesday, Lane Kiffin and Rick Neuheisel will have one final push to persuade Hobbi to come to LA.

Hobbi’s head coach at Saguaro, John Sanders, stated "They've been relentless," referring to UCLA and USC. When asked whether he thought ASU was losing ground as other schools pushed the envelope, Sanders replied "I think they are."

That is when the anxiety heightens.

After losing out on countless big-name, in-state offensive linemen this recruiting cycle, ASU needs to land Hobbi. Ranked as the sixth-best offensive guard (Scout.com), Hobbi will host a press conference Friday at 1 pm to announce which college he will attend.

In the meantime, the focus shifts to Erickson’s two highest ranked verbal commits. Both Dillon Van Der Wal and Michael Eubank are considering jumping ship and taking their talents elsewhere.

Van Der Wal, ranked as the 12th-best tight end (Scout.com), is preferred as a defensive end by Erickson and ASU recruiting coordinator, Grady Stretz, but has not ruled out a role on the offensive side either.

Van Der Wal visited Arkansas over the weekend and is expected to visit Vanderbilt this upcoming weekend. Both schools are interested in the Oaks Christian tight end as just that—a tight end.

Quite possibly the most surprising prospect wavering on his verbal commitment is quarterback Michael Eubank. Eubank comes from ASU’s most valuable recruiting pipeline, Corona Centennial High School (Corona, CA).

With Eubank’s verbal commitment in December, the Sun Devils were looking at signing at least one Corona Centennial Husky for the past four years, including, most notably, middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict.

Now, with Eubank weighing his options, the Sun Devils’ recruiting class could take a significant hit. Eubank is considering Utah, a fellow Pacific 12 South Division foe, and Vanderbilt.

Utah might seem intriguing for Eubank, especially after the Utes named offensive mastermind Norm Chow as offensive coordinator this past week. As for Vanderbilt, Eubank and Van Der Wal will be visiting Nashville the same weekend.

Perhaps both will take their talents to the Southeast, or maybe both Sun Devil “soft verbals” will realize what ASU has to offer compared to Vanderbilt, and Utah.

Currently, ASU has 12 verbal commitments. Both Eubank and Van Der Wal are the jewels of this recruiting class to date. If one, or even both Eubank and Van Der Wal ditch the Sun Devils for greener pastures, Erickson’s recruiting efforts will have come up short for the first time in Tempe.

Although, if both prospects are retained through next Wednesday’s signing day, then recruiting will be deemed a success.

As for Cyrus Hobbi, well, if the big Saguaro lineman announces that he will be a Sun Devil rather than a Trojan or Bruin, jubilation will break out in the ASU Athletic Department.

For now, the ASU coaches have a lot of phone calls and in-home visits to make to persuade their commits to stay committed.

Corona, CA: Los Angeles Blues will open at home May 1

The Los Angeles Blues will open their inaugural USL Pro season with four games in April in the Caribbean to start the season before the first home game at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State Fullerton on May 1 against Antigua Barracuda FC.

Along with seven games at Cal State Fullerton, the LA Blues will also play four of their 12 home games at Centennial High School in Corona, CA, and one game at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA. The team will visit Santa Clarita on July 17 against River Plate Puerto Rico and is targeting another game in Santa Clarita as part of a doubleheader with its sister club Pali Blues in the USL W-League.

The Blues are part USL PRO’s International Division with four Caribbean teams: Antigua Barracuda FC, Sevilla FC, Puerto Rico United and River Plate Puerto Rico. The Blues will play each team in its division four times, as well as games against Charlotte, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Richmond outside of the International Division.

“Our two Caribbean road trips are going to be very important for us this season,” said Blues Vice President Charlie Naimo. “One third of our games will be during two stretches on the road in April and late May so those will be huge tests for us. We will be ready come April 15.”

Playing in Corona allows for the Blues to play two games in one weekend against the same opponent at different venues on several weekends throughout the summer.

“We are glad to have the opportunity to play in Corona and Santa Clarita along with our primary home venue at Titan Stadium. It will allow us to expand our fan base over the course of the season,” said Naimo.

Corona, CA: Football...Get ready for a St. Bonaventure-Corona Centennial game

Ventura St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien said Tuesday his school has reached agreement to play a week 1 game this fall against Corona Centennial. He said he expects to sign a contract this week.

St. Bonaventure and Centennial are expected to be CIF bowl game championship contenders. St. Bonaventure returns quarterback Marc Evans, running back Shaun Wick and several top offensive linemen.

Centennial has been known for its high-scoring offense, and the Huskies return most of their offensive line and several key defensive players from a 14-1 team.

St. Bonaventure has beaten Long Beach Poly each of the last two seasons.

Pascarella Excited About Saturday Visit (Corona, CA)

Centennial HS OL Gavin Pascarella (Corona, CA) will make his official visit to Boise State on Saturday. It's no secret that Pascarella is one of the targets on the recruiting board. Expect the Bronco coaching staff to give him the full Boise State experience. He spoke to BroncoCountry.com about the visit on Saturday and his most recent game.

Corona, CA: Mater Dei can't keep up with Centennial this time

Barkley has a rough night as the Monarchs are beaten on both sides of the ball.

Friday night's nonleague game between Centennial of Corona and Mater Dei turned into another track meet.

This time, however, the Huskies were the ones celebrating at the finish line. The Huskies (2-0), behind a balanced offense, exacted a bit of revenge against the Monarchs (2-1) with a 47-35 home victory at Santa Ana Stadium in front of an estimated crowd of 7,500.

"I thought it was a continuation of last year's game," Centennial coach Matt Logan said."Our defense played great in the second half to hold them to just that one score."

This year's game didn't have the video game-like numbers of last year's meeting, when the teams combined for more than 1,300 total yards. The Monarchs won last year's meeting that game, 51-37, also played at Santa Ana Stadium. The teams combined for 966 total yards Friday.

"Very physical, very fast," was how Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson described Centennial.

The Huskies were the designated home team and made themselves feel right at home from the outset.

Much of that physical play was evident in the Huskies ground attack, led by senior running back Arthur Burns. Burns, who was a backup to Ryan Bass (Arizona St.) last year, performed like a star against the Monarchs. He rushed for 234 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns. (Bass rushed for 350 yards last year against the Monarchs.)

Centennial displayed its defensive plan early in the game when they sacked Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley on the third play.

Offensively, the Huskies scored on their first possession in 18 seconds by going 47 yards on two plays, and they didn't seem to be stopped seemed to be unstoppable after that .It all added up to a long night for Barkley and the county's top-ranked team Mater Dei Monarchs.

Barkley completed 23 of 45 passes for 412 yards. He threw three touchdowns passes but was intercepted three times. He was also sacked three times.

The Huskies were able to get to Barkley throughout the game and forced him into several rushed throws. Mater Dei was again forced to play without junior offensive lineman Chris Ward, who is out because of a knee injury.

Centennial went into halftime with a 33-28 lead. It opened the second half with a five-play, 68-yard drive that ended on a 3-yard run by Burns to put the Monarchs back on their heels.

The defense held the Monarchs scoreless in the second half until a 3-yard touchdown pass from Barkley to Derek Campbell with 3:12 left in the game.

This was second time in the first three games this season that Mater Dei has allowed an opponent to score at least 40 points.

Mater Dei allowed 43 points to Carson in its season opener, Sept. 3.The Monarchs play host to L.A. Jordan next Thursday.

"Sutton is bigger than you would think. On paper his size is a worrisome issue, but on film he looks to be a thickly built kid who can hang in the trenches. If he truly is 250 pounds he will still need to add some good bulk, but he is a big 250! Has a solid get-off, but needs to be more consistent in his initial explosiveness. Does a good job of protecting his legs. Will flash the ability to come off the ball, shoot his hands, derive power from the hips, and stand a blocker up and hold his ground. Displays good natural strength, but needs to be more consistent in bringing his hands and staying low. An area where his size may be an obstacle is with his reach and his ability to separate and shed from bigger blockers. Does a good job of being able to slant across a blockers face and rip and get penetration. Looks comfortable when asked to do a line twist and will stay square and come off the penetrators butt. Will telegraph though when he is getting ready to run a twist. He is an active kid who will work to get free and get to the ball. Reads blocks fairly well and can get flat and down the line of scrimmage. Has solid speed and takes good pursuit angles, but needs to work on that some. Shows very adequate short-area change-of-direction skills. He is a solid tackler. As a pass rusher he will work to get to half-a-man and works to try and dip and rip. Can bull rush. Needs to work on counters as he can get stuck if he can not get to the blockers shoulder. Sutton is an interesting kid. Size will be a bit of an obstacle, but he does some things that intrigue you. At worst should be able to develop into a good wave player." - ESPN

"Corona (Calif.) Centennial defensive tackle William Sutton has added the Huskers to his offer list. The 6-foot, 250-pounder is up to five offers.

“It is the same as all of the other schools that have offered me. They are all pretty high right now,” Sutton said,

“I know that they are in the Big 12 and they play a lot of good schools. Their fans are highly into the game and they sell out every game. …I think it is one of the bigger offers I have got.

Sutton doesn’t have plans to take unofficial trips this summer and Centennial doesn’t have a bye week, so a trip to Nebraska might have to be made after his senior season. He does have in mind some of the priorities he is considering for each school.

“First, I’m looking at education — what percentage of athletes that graduate at the school,” he said. “And then I’ll look at the coaching staff, the facilities, the players and everything else.”

Sutton feels that his junior year went “real good.” He ended up with 70 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and one fumble recovery.

“I always make plays in the backfield,” he said. “I was second in tackles for loss and I had about 14. … I got quicker compared to last year. I went from a 5.2 40-yard dash to a 4.9 as my best, and then I went from a 4.6 shuttle time to a 4.2 shuttle. Then, I jumped a 32-inch vertical.”" - Kearney Hub
