Exhibit Goal to Find Forever Families for Foster Children

A heart rendering photographic exhibit officially opens on Monday, April 23 at The Shops at Dos Lagos in Corona. The Heart Gallery features professional photographs of 50 children in foster care in California and other states across the U.S. The public is invited to view the gallery size portraits in display windows throughout The Shops at Dos Lagos, located at on Temescal Canyon Road between Weirick Road and Cajalco Road, just off the I-15 in Riverside County.

Professional photographers volunteered their time and talents to photograph the children who are featured in the national traveling exhibit which is touring selected venues throughout the U.S. Many of the children featured in the gallery are considered “hard to place in permanent homes” because they are older, in sibling groups that hope to stay together, or have special needs. The children’s photographs can also be viewed on line at www.nationalheartgalleryexhibit.org.

Teaching is often a struggle for one third grade classroom at Parkridge Elementary School in Corona. Half the students know little English and most of them are from low-income families.

Parents are well aware of the problems.

"When we first moved here, they gave us a letter saying that the school was one of the lower scoring schools in the district," said parent Jerry Rangel.

But things are changing dramatically for the school. The Corona-Norco Unified School District is one of four finalists nationwide for the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education, which recognizes big jumps in performance among low-income and minority students in urban districts across the U.S.

That's exactly what Kyle has, though. Esther Babcock is turning 104 this week. She was born on April 18, 1908.

"If we couldn't walk, my dad had an old Ford Model A," she recalls. "We were one of the few families that had a car."

Corona, CA: Pastor, 2 men jailed in kidnapping, abuse case

The pastor of a small Corona church and two of his followers are in jail on suspicion of kidnapping, torture and child abuse, among other allegations, in what police say was a “terrible and tragic” way to discipline a 13-year-old boy.

Over the course of several days, the Corona teen was forced to dig a grave, beaten with a shovel, tied up, pepper sprayed and pinched with pliers, said Corona police Capt. Jerry Rodriguez.

Police have arrested a man for the road-rage shooting death of a Southern California motorist in 2009.

Corona police Chief Michael Abel says in a news release that 27-year-old Carlos Vasquez Reynaga was arrested on Monday. He has been charged with murder.
