Olympic Team Performs at City Pool in Riverside, CA

The U. S. Olympic Synchronized Swimming Team will give one of its last public performances before the Summer Olympics from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, at the Sippy Woodhead Pool at Bobby Bonds Park.

Two of the members, 20-year-old Brooke Abel and 18-year-old Meghan Kinney, are from the Riverside Aquettes, a local synchronized swimming team.

“This is an opportunity for the people of Riverside to have a connection to the Beijing Olympics,” said Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge. “We are proud of the two young women who represent our city on the team as they travel to compete at the top of their sport.”

Tickets are $20 a person to watch the performance. The cost is $10 for children 6 to 12 and children under 5 are free. Tickets are for sale at the gate of the pool.

The Riverside Arts Council invites individual artists and members of educational institutions and arts organizations to submit qualifications and work samples for temporary, biannual exhibits in Riverside County’s Administrative Center located at 4080 Lemon Street in Riverside, California.

Background
On December 11, 2002, the County of Riverside opened an extension of its existing administrative center. The Riverside Arts Council manages biannual, rotating exhibits in the main lobby, Executive Offices lobby, and the Board of Supervisors’ lobby beginning May 2003.

Guidelines
To be considered for this exhibit, entries must showcase two-dimensional works and you must be a Riverside County artist. “Three dimensional” artwork such as pottery, statuary and similar objects cannot be accepted at this time. Artworks can consist of any style and subject as long as the subject matter is presentable to the general public. RAC is responsible for choosing works that are unique and inspiring to help enhance the aesthetic experience for users of the County Administrative Center. No individual work of art should exceed $10,000 in value. Artwork may not exceed dimensions of 90” (width) x 54” (height) x 3” deep framed, due to display space restrictions.

Budget
Each exhibit, inclusive of all art pieces and any involved artist(s), has been allocated a maximum $5,000.00 budget for lending of artwork, insurance, taxes, transportation, installation, de-installation, travel and any other expenses the artist(s) may incur.

This Call for Entries is not a commission to produce work, and does not commit the Riverside Arts Council to award a contract or to pay any costs incurred in the preparation of a response to this request. The Riverside Arts Council retains the right to reject any responses not in accordance with this criteria. The Riverside Arts Council is under no obligation to any artist who submits materials under this Call for Entries.

 Artist statement addressing artwork submitted for display
 Current résumé of any artist whose work is submitted for display (each résumé not to exceed 2 pages)
 Digital images in jpeg format, color prints, or color slides (color slides must be delivered in a plastic slide sheet(s) displaying pre-existing pieces proposed for exhibition; all slides must be labeled with an arrow indicating top of slide, artist’s name, and number corresponding to number on slide list)
 Annotated list that includes artist, title, medium, size (including the frame) and date of completion for each submitted work
 An adequately sized and stamped self-addressed envelope for return of materials; materials submitted without an envelope will not be returned

USC Trojans Racking Up the Recruits; Corona, CA ranks right up there!

Making a push this year to reclaim the number one recruiting class in the nation, the USC Trojans are in great shape and way ahead of last year’s number eight ranking.

Despite the new spring no-contact rule for head coaches, Pete Carroll and his staff have wasted no time in singling out the best high school players in the nation. They already had several commitments from the start of the year.

Five-stars Morrell Presley, a 6'3", 4.52 tight end from Carson (CA) High School, and Kevin Graf, a 6'6", 300-pound offensive tackle from Agoura (CA) High School; plus four-stars Marquis Simmons, a 6'0", 220-pound, 4.62 linebacker from Dominguez High School, Compton, CA; Randall Carroll, a speedy 5'10" wide receiver from Cathedral High School, Los Angeles; and T.J. McDonald, a 6'1", 4.63 safety from Edison High School, Fresno, CA, all committed in 2007.

Then in January, the Gatorade Player of the Year, five-star quarterback Matt Barkley, 6'3", 227 pounds, from Mater Dei High School, Santa Ana, CA, committed to become a Trojan.

Barkley’s commitment drew the attention of more recruits. Four more top high school players committed in February.

Vontaze Burfict, a five-star, 6'2", 235-pound linebacker from Centennial High School in Corona, CA; Devon Flournoy, a four-star, 6'2", 4.40 wide receiver from Birmingham High School, Van Nuys, CA; Patrick Hall, a four-star, 6'1", 181-pound safety from St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, CA; and Chris Metcalf, a three-star, 6'1", 190-pound safety from Compton (CA) High School gave their commitments to the Trojans.

In May the Trojans got a commitment from a five-star JC defensive tackle, Hebron Fangupo, 6'2", 230 pounds from Mount San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, CA.

Then four players who attended the Rising Stars Camp at USC a little over a week ago gave their commitments to the Trojans. One of them, Ashlon Jeffrey, a four-star 6'4", 200-pound wide receiver from Calhoun County High School in Saint Matthew, SC, actually committed a couple of weeks before the camp.

The other three were Byron Moore, a four-star 6'1", 200-pound safety from Nathaniel Narbonne High School, Harbor City, CA; Torin Harris, a three-star, 6'0", 175-pound cornerback from Palo Verde High School, Las Vegas, NV; and James Boyd, a three-star, 6'5", 230-pound defensive end from Jordan High School, Los Angeles, CA, who was closely recruited by USC assistant coach Ken Norton.

Altogether, that makes four five-stars, seven four-stars, and three three-stars. Once the season starts, any one of those three-stars could move up a notch or two—they are that good, having shown off their talents for the coaches at the Rising Stars Camp.

In addition, the Trojans got their first commit for the Class of 2010 from Dillon Baxter, a 6'0", 4.50 running back from Mission Bay High School, San Diego, CA, during the camp.

The Trojan coaching staff still has its eyes set on some of the finest players in the nation to fill the approximately seven or eight remaining scholarships. That number could change, of course, depending on how many scholarship players leave to enter the 2009 NFL draft or transfer.

Right now, the Trojans have 24 offers outstanding, ten of them to five-star and fourteen to four-star players. Unlike many of their present commits who are from California, most of these players are spread out across the country.

As for the Class of 2008, most of the recruits are on campus and working out with the returning players from last year’s team. From all reports, the freshmen look ready and willing to compete.

As usual, it has been the Trojan standard during the Pete Carroll era to reload instead of rebuild. Good news for USC—bad news for the rest of the Pac-10.

INLAND IDOL ANNOUNCES CELEBRITY JUDGES

CORONA, Calif. -- Olympic Silver medal gymnast and Tony-nominated actress Cathy Rigby will join “Desperate Housewives” creator and producer Marc Cherry and others as celebrity judges for the Aug. 9 concert finale of Inland Idol – a vocal contest open to Inland Empire children from 7 to 18 years old.

The concert, featuring finalists from qualifying auditions in July, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Stage One Auditorium at Crossroads Church, 2331 Kellogg Ave., Corona. Tickets will be available starting July 9 online at www.InlandIdol.com ($12 in advance) or $15 at the door.

Registration is now open for one of three qualifying audition venues to be held in July at locations in Temecula, San Bernardino and Corona. Signups began June 12 and will continue only until 600 people in each of three age divisions (7-10, 11-14, and 15-18) have applied. AV Capital Inc. Acquires 10,000-SF Property on E. Grand Blvd.

AV Capital Inc. purchased the 10,000-square-foot office building at 212 E. Grand Blvd. in Corona, CA, for $1.42 million, or approximately $143 per square foot. The capitalization rate was 7%.

The two-story building is on a corner lot and has 91 Freeway visibility.

Cable Show About Medical Marijuana to Air

NORCO - You may not be able to dispense medical marijuana here, but you can learn about it.
"Marijuana: Compassion and Common Sense," a local cable show, began airing in Norco and Riverside in June.

"We're trying to tell the people about the benefits of the medical marijuana," said host and medical-marijuana advocate Lanny Swerdlow. "Humans have been using marijuana for over 5,000 years, and it was always seen as a medicine. But 70 years ago, suddenly, this became this dirty drug."

Swerdlow said the show's purpose is educational.

In September, Norco's City Council amended its zoning code by a 3- 1 vote to prohibit medical-marijuana dispensaries. Claremont and Chino have taken similar actions.

Ken Andersen of Corona, who operated the medical-marijuana dispensary Collective Solution before it was banned by Norco, said he was glad the show was airing locally.

"Anything to put the eye of medical marijuana out to the world, anything that can further awareness is good," Andersen said.

Every episode of the show includes discussion of recent issues medical-marijuana issues and interviews with local advocates and politicians.

Aside from producing and hosting the show, Swerdlow runs the Marijuana Anti-Prohibition Project, a support group for medical- marijuana patients that holds monthly meetings throughout the Inland Empire. He also hosts a radio show every week on the same topic.

The cable show started three years ago in the Coachella Valley.

Swerdlow said he hopes to expand to more cities in the Inland Empire. The half-hour show airs Tuesday nights at 8 on Channel 32 in Norco.

Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang is coming to Riverside, CA

July 19 – September 14, 2008

Charles Monroe Schulz brightened the world for 50 years with his Peanuts comic strip. With Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the lovable Peanuts Gang, Schulz explored the emotional territory of friendship, disappointment, faith, and tolerance. He was an artist and a storyteller who transformed images of everyday life into art that captured the humor, vulnerability, and dignity of the human spirit.

Through Peanuts, Schulz connected the world with his drawings and stories. Peanuts at Bat: The Life and Art of Charles M. Schulz explores Schulz’s personal history and his role as the sole inspiration and artistic talent behind Peanuts and its unique cast of characters.

Schulz once proclaimed, “It seems beyond the comprehension of people that someone can be born to draw comic strips, but I think I was.” The exhibition follows Schulz from his Minnesota roots to his life in California and tracks the development of the characters that make up the unique world of Peanuts.

It's Naked Cowboy, 1; naked M&M, 0

I like it when I'm right, especially about naked men. Especially about naked cowboys.

When I wrote in April that the lawsuit filed by Robert Burck "may be the end of the era of the "naked" cowboy and predicted he would be able to afford some "very nice duds," my fellow lawyers laughed at me.

One close friend -- let's call him Larry -- said as he snickered, "I read your article. You can't be serious. You really think that the Naked Cowboy is going to cash in? Well, I predict he is going to get thrown out of court. If he doesn't, maybe I will start walking around my office in my tighty whities."

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin didn't throw the cowboy from his steed. In fact, in a lengthy decision, Judge Chin ruled against the the makers of M&Ms, rejecting Mars, Inc.'s' attempt to dismiss the Cowboy's lawsuit. And it seems that Judge Chin has a sense of humor.

On the first page of his decision, the judge pasted photos of the litigating parties side by side and wrote, "This is the case of The Naked Cowboy versus The Blue M&M."

And what a case it is. Burck sued Mars in April for $6 million in federal court in New York. The central allegation: trademark infringement under the Lanham Act, arising from a video billboard for M&Ms.

Most people, and maybe Mars, thought the Cowboy was just a kooky street entertainer dressed in his underwear. However, I've spoken to Mr. Cowboy, I mean, Mr. Burke, and he didn't seem kooky to me at all. In fact, he seemed kinda smart.

Even Judge Chin recognized that The Naked Cowboy is no ordinary street entertainer. Although he performs in New York City's Time Square in little more than underwear and a smile, he has registered trademarks to "The Naked Cowboy" name and likeness.

And he doesn't just sing in Times Square. He has a Web site http://www.nakedcowboy.com/ with his modeling photos and has a link to nakedcowboy.tv. You can download his music on itunes. You can buy his tighty whities from his online store for $15. He even has a podcast.

Judge Chin observed that "Burck has appeared as The Naked Cowboy in various television shows, movies, and video games. He has also licensed his name and likeness to companies for endorsements and advertisements. He even appeared in a Chevrolet commercial that aired during Super Bowl XLI.

Judge Chin then explained that "beginning in April 2007, Mars began running an animated cartoon advertisement on two oversized video billboards in Times Square, featuring a blue M&M dressed "exactly like The Naked Cowboy," wearing only a white cowboy hat, cowboy boots, and underpants, and carrying a guitar." And get this - the video "played on a continuous loop every few minutes over a nine-month period."

Mars tried to defend itself by arguing that the Blue M&M was just a parody of the Cowboy and was protected under the First Amendment.

Although imitation is supposed to be the sincerest form of flattery, Judge Chin didn't agree with M&M's parody argument. Rather, Judge Chin thought it was a question for a jury to decide and wrote that the complaint "plausibly argues that consumers would believe that the M&M Cowboy characters were promoting a product rather than merely parodying The Naked Cowboy, and that viewers would believe that The Naked Cowboy had endorsed M&Ms."

Then Judge Chin ordered the lawyers to appear in his courtroom for a pretrial conference on July 11 at noon. High Noon.

That Judge Chin makes me laugh. Round One to the Cowboy. Larry, maybe you should start walking around the office in your tighty whities.

Pinkberry...Yum-UP!

Yesterday while shopping at the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos I couldn't help but stop by the infamous, better-respect Pinkberry. So, for the sake of science I ordered my very first Pinkberry frozen yogurt to compare to (what was formerly known as) Swirl. Now, I have only had a total of one Swirl experience but I'll gladly give Pinkberry their credit -- indeed, a (decent-sized) portion of heaven. Now, the immediate downfall is that it is not self-serve and they only have 3 yogurt flavors: original, green tea, and coffee. Also, they don't have as many topping choices as Swirl; but I like my yogurt simple so that wasn't a disappointment for me. That being said, their most-commonly-ordered "original" flavor was one of the best, if not THE best yogurt my little taste buds have ever experienced. A fresh, very distinct, never-gets-old flavor that delightfully compliments the toppings I had (strawberries, kiwi, and granola) . . . Maybe I should be a food critic. And while you'll still pay enough money to constitute a meal, they give you enough for it to be just that.

Admittedly, Swirl gets the job done, and pretty well at that . . . But Pinkberry, you just might have a little place in my heart.
