Officials in Riverside County are considering a proposal to charge convicted inmates for the cost of their incarceration.
Under the plan, sponsored by Supervisor Jeff Stone, the county would charge a daily rate of $142 to cover cost of housing and feeding the inmate.
The proposal would also impose a $5 fee for visitors and seek reimbursement for the cost of medical care, court filing fees, use of jail telephones and probation services.
Stone says the measure is designed to target people convicted of misdemeanors who have assets and jobs.
The Board voted 4-0 to direct County Counsel Pamela Walls to study the idea and return with a proposed ordinance in four months.
