Corona police shoot man as he flees stolen vehicle

CORONA, Calif. - Authorities say Corona police have shot and killed a man as he fled from a stolen sport utility vehicle in Riverside County.

Officers responded to a report of a suspected druken driver behind the wheel of a white SUV on Monday afternoon.

Police say a computer check confirmed the vehicle was stolen during a carjacking.

Spokesman Sgt. Jerry Pawluczenko says when officers saw the suspect leaving the vehicle, they pursued him. He says the man pulled a weapon as he fled, and officers shot him.

Pawluczenko could not say when the vehicle was stolen or why the suspect fled.

The man died at the hospital. His name has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

One officer has been placed on administrative leave.
