A bridge over the Riverside (91) Freeway that connects several communities on the western end of Corona will be shut down tonight and most of this weekend, and Caltrans officials urged motorists to plan ahead.
Beginning at midnight, Caltrans will close the Green River Road bridgefor 36 hours as work proceeds on a six-lane span being constructed to replacethe existing four-lane bridge, according to Shelli Lombardo of Caltrans.
She said the closure will be lifted at noon Sunday. But in the meantime, commuters will need to find alternate routes to their homes and businesses, depending on where they exit the freeway.
The Green River Golf Club community lies to the north of the 91 freeway, and the South Hills community on the south side at Green River Road.
Motorists will be able to exit at Green River, but will need to use different junctures at least a mile away if they intend to cross from one side of the freeway to the other, Lombardo said.``North side access to Green River Road is available only from the westbound 91,'' she said.
``Eastbound motorists must proceed on the 91 to Serfas Club Drive, drive west on the 91, and exit at Green River Road.
''Motorists trying to reach the south side of Green River Road from the eastbound 91 will have no trouble. But westbound travelers will have to continue on the 91 until they reach Gypsum Canyon Road in Orange County, then drive back on the westbound 91 and exit at Green River, according to Lombardo.
In early September, bridge construction forced overnight closures on both sides of the 91 freeway for 10-hour stretches, and Lombardo said two or three similar closures may be necessary this year.
The Green River crossing is Corona's oldest, according to Lombardo.
She said 22,000 motorists use the span on a given day.
The new bridge, which will include reconfigured ramps and greater clearance for commercial vehicles, is expected to cost $21 million and be finished by the end of the year, Lombardo said.
