Corona, CA: California Shul Guilt Trips Mel Gibson

A temple in Southern California asks Mel Gibson to prove he is not an Anti-Semite by donating money to their cause

Congregation Beth Shalom, located in Corona California, sent a letter to Mel Gibson asking for a large sum of money that will aid in relieving their substantial debt. They have labeled their cause SOS: Save Our Synagogue.

The temple is at risk of foreclosure, and believes that Mel Gibson could improve his reputation within the Jewish community if he donates the necessary sum of money to prevent the temple’s doors from closing down.

The letter, addressed to the office of Mel Gibson, and written by Congregation Beth Shalom President Bruce Williams, states as follows:

“We are requesting Mel Gibson’s support in our efforts to SOS (Save Our Synagogue).

A brief history of the Jewish House of Worship in Corona, CA was founded in 1968 and for 40+ years we have provided a home for those of the Jewish faith, as well friends, who wish to come and pray, attend services, attend educational program, etc. In 2008, the synagogue broke ground on a new facility in south Corona, with hopes of expanding its membership. This modest building was constructed and a loan was secured for $1.6 million dollars. As the economy shifted, we experienced members who could no longer supports donations etc. for our synagogue. And today we are close to closing the building that we strived to be our home for years.

Our proposal to you, Mr. Gibson, is since you have been cited as an Anti-Semitic, and have denied those allegations, what better way to prove to all your fans and the nay Sayers- than to endorse and help raise finds for our cause- SOS, Save Our Synagogue.

Your immediate involvement is requested and truly needed. In Yiddish, a word used from the lips of most Jewish mothers and fathers as they ask the Almighty for wisdom and guidance towards their sons and daughters- is for them to grow up as Mensch (simple explanation: a person who does great deeds and is respected). Today, Mr. Gibson, we offer you to be a Mensch and make a sizable contribution to our cause.

Thank you in advance to your positive response to our request.”
